stupid GPS tricks

Post by Tad Eareckson »

OK, some long unanswered questions of Scott's I'd been thinking about before.
Catalyzed by Paul's small faux pas.

Naw for the last part the best I could come up with was my trusty 1997
Washington sectional, a ruler, a magnifying glass, and lotsa time and swearing. If
there was a better way I don't want to know at this point (tell me anyway).

Several ideas to help navigate in the vicinity of the hostile airspace...
(I'm using a Garmin GPSmap 76S and I imagine the other current stuff has similar
bells and whistles.)

Proximity Waypoints - Basic

Punch in the coordinates for, say, Dover Air Force Base and punch in a five
mile radius. Stay clear of the nice circle drawn on your map display.

Proximity Waypoints - Cool

Punch in two proximity waypoints for Philadelphia International with
identical coordinates. Define radii of 35 and 18 miles. Concentric circles appear on
the display. When you get to the ring defined by Philly 4 stay below 4K.
When you get to Philly 3 you can cruise a bit farther below 3K while looking for
a soccer field. (Do they play polo up there?)

Routes - Really Cool

Use the coordinates of consecutive key points of the no trespassing fence to
define a route. First and last points are identical if you need to close the
fence. When you're getting close to Federalsburg hit the nav key and tell it
R-4006. (This may interfere with something else you're trying to do but...
toggle and deal with it. Best I could do.) The boundaries of the MOA along
with, in the example below, the cutouts for Salisbury appear. After you squeak
through that mess navigate R-6604 so's you don't end up as a hood ornament on
something going suborbital.

The stuff below is beyond my wildest dreams for the possibilities of the
Delmarva Peninsula. It's pretty good but take a look at a preferably current
sectional anyway. Airport radii are listed in statute miles, elevations in feet.

If you'd rather not format all that data for your receiver and you're running
Mac OS 9 and MacGPS Pro you're in luck. Otherwise an easy hoop or two should
do it.
