Flying Weekend of 3/25 - 3/27
Looks good at Elizabethville both Friday and Saturday. Sunday looks strong and COLD at Woodstock. I plan on definitely flying Elizabethville Friday afternoon and Saturday. Elizabethville is the perfect site to fly when it's west at Woodstock (not ideal) and blown out at the Pulpit. Who's up for some flying this weekend? Bacil

Somewhat tempted for a late-day flight on Sunday at Woodstock.
Base surface winds are forecast to drop to 10 by 6pm. The surf gust factor is 20 at the end of the day, and the ADDS 3k forecast is in the 20-30 kt blue color.
But I don't know... G20 well past sunset. A high of 40. Work the next day. Anyone enthusiastic, or is this another of those "meh" forecasts?

"Meh"
The gust-factor on the NWS surface hourly has been ramped up this morning, too much for me I think....

Two straight soaring flights at Elizabethville in so many days. Not too shabby.
Day one: Got to the winery LZ around 2P to give Will Hynla a ride up to launch, leaving his truck in the winery parking lot. Will had a good launch around 4P and easily got up with cloudy skies aloft. I leisurely set up after some local campers showed up, considering using them as launch assistants. Thought better of it, and contacted Will after he landed at the winery LZ. Will came back up, and I had a nice launch after 5P and easily got up. I had visions of making it to the grass airstrip at Carsonville, where I had landed back in April 2009. A distinct strong SW cross was present aloft, so I flew upwind to stage for a crosswind glide to the strip. I didn't get high enough for a comfortable glide, but I was easily within range of the huge secondary LZ at Keefer Farm. So after a half hour flight, I committed to landing there. Had an easy approach and landing. Mr. Keefer's daughter Lilah pulled up as I was breaking down. She had seen me from Mountain House Road as I flew crosswind to enter the pattern. We had a nice conversation, and she left to drive to her house next to her parents' farm. Will came over and gave me a body ride back up after he finished breaking down at the winery. Thanks Will.
Day two: Arrived at launch at 9A. Soarable already. An early flight was the plan, since afternoon conditions would be too strong. I set up and waited for Will to arrive. Skies showed snirga cells directly upwind and to the north. Will got there around 9:45A, and arranged to meet Allan at the LZ to drop Will's truck. By the time they arrived back up at launch, the snirga cells had dissipated, and launch conditions were smooth. I had the smoothest launch in a long time just before 11A and got up easy. Tried the same strategy as the day before, but could never find a climb to get as high as I did Friday. And conditions were choppy. Got flung into a near wingover when the left wing got lifted to ~ a 70 bank. After nearly an hour of soaring, I saw 2 snirga cells upwind moving my way. Decided to get down quickly and land at the winery LZ. Had a nice approach and landing. LONG CARRY OUT from the back of the LZ. Exhausted, I parked the glider in the lee of the wind next to the winery building, expecting a gust front. Will landed shortly after I did, also seeing the cells upwind. During breaking down, sure enough a gust front moved through, but the glider was protected. Will decided to break down halfway between the upper LZ and the winery building, and he got hit by the gust front. A first birthday party was staging inside the winery for a 1P start, and the mother of the birthday boy offered me drink and food later. Will gave me a body ride to launch, and I was rewarded w/ a free lunch upon my return to the winery building. Thank you Jessica Lentz! After eating, I went back up to launch, and Allan was waiting it out. Pretty blown out, so I hit the road. Will stuck around, in case Allan decided to fly. But the skies were real ugly upwind, so I doubt that Allan flew. Bacil
