Sacramento Monday March 15th

Post by XCanytime »

Heading to the SAC tomorrow. Good direction and speed but gonna be quite cold. Eyeing flying during the warmest part of the day. Goal is a 6+ acre backyard in Millersburg belonging to a couple I met 2 months ago at Elizabethville. Bacil

Got to the SAC around 12:30P. High cirrus and moderate conditions. Let Joe & Karen know I was up top, and said I'd be ready at 2P to go. Set up and waited. Conditions got strong at times, but smooth edges (slow rise and fall times of the noise in the trees) while I waited. Joe & Karen made it to the top around 2:45P, and brought borderline blown out conditions w/ them  . Didn't last long, so w/ their help, I had a good launch around 3P and easily got up in lift right in front of the slot. Got to 3200' MSL and used that to jump the Klingerstown Gap. Got low on the next stretch of ridge where the lumber magnate's hunting club is located on top, but found some ratty lift and approached the Pillow Gap. Had to work hard to get up to ~ 2400' MSL before jumping the Pillow Gap. Got down to the "saddle" gap and found good lift and climbed up to around 3400' MSL. Saw the goal in the distance, w/ the Lykens Valley Golf Club about halfway there. I was cold and didn't really try too hard, so I essentially glided straight to the golf course and ended up landing in a huge farm field on the eastern border of the golf course. Had a nice landing around 4:25P in a smooth breeze and carried over to the 8th tee next to a wall of tall evergreens. They provided a perfect windblock so I could break down the glider in the wind shadow. The dewpoint was -2 degrees F, and the surface temp was around 40 degrees F. Quite a dry air mass. So the cold and dry air scrambled my brain a little (not hard to do  ). I couldn't remember what day it was after landing. OLD and COLD is not GOLD . Called up Russ, who lived ~ 3 miles away, and he gave me a body ride back to launch. Allan's truck was the only vehicle there. Went and retrieved the glider from the evergreen "fence" around the 8th tee. Called Allan and found out he got an hour and a half, and that it went magic after 5P. Joe & Karen DNF. No Ayvri track today. Bozo hit the wrong button and turned off the GPS before saving the track. Not a suprise since I couldn't initially remember what day it was just after landing. Bacil
