OT : A step toward biomimetic articulated wings?

Post by markc »

Who among us hasn't watched with envy as a falcon tucks its wings, enters a steep dive, and then slices through trees at speed on the way to a favorite perch?

Just imagine what it must be like to fly with an articulated wing! So I keep an eye out for articles like the one linked below. Read on to learn more about.... PigeonBot!!

Soft biohybrid morphing wings with feathers underactuated by wrist and finger motion

Perhaps pilots of the future will fly with arms outstretched, using mere finger flicks to accomplish a turn.

The amount of work (and math!) that went into this project is amazing, especially for such a small team. Suggest that you hit the discussion /conclusion section first, then examine the rest of the article for whatever interests you the most.
