Just a reminder that this week is the Allegany County Fair at Cumberland. It is a perfect opportunity to fly the Fairgrounds site. Visitors are permitted to fly during the Fair without joining.
The site frequency is 144.95 and the local POC is Jim Rowan (301 729 0773)
If you plan to go, please be certain you complete the required waiver forms (Fairgrounds, High Point), available at http://www.chgpa.org.
I would normally go to High Rock on a day like today, but I am planning to head to Cumberland this evening.

Allegany County Fair at Cumberland - this week
Drat - I've missed this for years, and now I can't go. It's well worth
the effort - when else can you fly over a Ferris wheel?
But make sure your landing skills are good.

Cumberland - 27 July 2005
Cumberland was fun today. This is the first time I've flown during the Fair in a few years. Bruce Engen and I arrived just before 6pm. JR and Greg were already flying. LE Herrick, Marcel Dettling and Corinne were high above launchy in their paragliders when we arrived. All of them had launched from High Point hours earlier.
Rather than make the longer drive to High Point, we went to the Fairgrounds launch to save time. I flew PG and enjoyed some smoooth air ... hands-off for much of the flight. I snapped a bunch of photos (link below). I was able to get high enough to make the hop over to high point and flew with Marcel for awhile. Bruce flew his 225 Falcon and carefully sratched his way up to join us at High Point. As we flew, the LZ got smaller and smaller. Cars arriving for the fair were filling it up at a rapid pace ... I was happy to be landing a paraglider instead of a topless hang glider. It is kinda interesting making a landing approach over bunch of parked (and moving) cars. Fortunately, there was just enough room by the time Bruce and Marcel landed.
Afterward, we enjoyed a nice meal at Uncle Tucker's.

It should be better tomorrow.

Great photos Spark! Sounds like the conditions were perfect for plenty of airtime. - Linda
Re: fairgrounds
Actually, by the time we got there, the thermal activity was amost over and winds at launch were rather light. We were lucky we didn't get sled rides. Everyone else arrived around 3pm. Marcel flew for 3 hours.breezyk1d wrote:Great photos Spark! Sounds like the conditions were perfect for plenty of airtime. - Linda
The later you arrive at launch on a Fair day, the less LZ you have to land in. By 6:30pm, the parking lot was half full. This photo was taken at about 7:30pm.BrianVH wrote:But make sure your landing skills are good.

Allegany County Fair at Cumberland - this week
Ditched work at 1230 (Thursday), got home and loaded by 1:30, met Jim
Rowan and LE Herrick in the LZ at 3:40 (!). Shawn Macduff arrived a
half hour later, then we all headed up to the High Point launch,
based on best wind direction. Adam Arkfeldt and John Macalister met
us at launch. By the time we set up it was 5:30. Jim went first on
his Falcon 195, then LE with her PG, then Shawn on his Falcon 225,
then Adam on his new U2, then me, finally John with his Talon. Lift
was good right near launch, less good but usable over the northwest
cliffs, and apparently a losing proposition near the Fairgrounds
launch, cause LE fought a long battle with gravity there. Everybody
got about a half hour. I got 500 over and landed when I did so as
not to have two pilots trying to use the shrinking LZ at once as the
lift died. There was still half of it or more left by the time I
landed at 6:30 (whack - waited too long to flare - ended up
waterskiing on the grass and gravel - in Tevas - guess I was spooked
about the LZ, although it should not have been a problem). Jim
provided covert beer. It was hot and sweaty both setting up and
breaking down. Jon, Jim, Adam and I ate at Tucker's. It was 1 AM
by the time I unloaded, showered and went to bed. What's not to
like?! Gorgeous site! Not too hazy, so you could see in all
directions at altitude. Would like to go over the back and land at
the airport sometime... Maybe landing just short of the Dulles NFZ
would be a better ambition... - Hugh
