Remarkable day at Jacks! Arrived at launch at ~8:30 to realize that the slot vegetation was thriving and if it wasn’t cut there would be no flying. If you haven’t visited Jacks, the launch is basically a narrow cliff/slot that now had one of the toughest waist high plants (aka weeds) on this planet covering most of the cliff side. A steal tipped weed whacker will cut it but without repelling gear, one could never be able to reach the stalks that could possibly hook a flying wire. In my opinion, Ric Caylor was the pilot “of the day”. Within 45 minutes of his arrival, armed with a weed whacker, Ric used his repelling expertise to clear the slot. The growth was so dense that he uncovered a functioning wind streamer halfway down the cliff that was obscured by the growth before he started.

While Ric was clearing the slot, four other PA pilots arrived including Roger (3 HG and 1PG). Pagen and Spoons also came to help with launch – thanks! I’m miserable at remembering names so if one of the PA pilots could post who was there, that would be great. Dennis also came out to help Sam, a new PA Hang 2, take his first Jacks Mt flight. After the others launched, I went down to the primary LZ to “walk the field” with Dennis and Sam, it was also my first flight at Jacks. Once back on top, Sam and I took off and flew together for over an hour with Mike flying his PG. The other HG pilots went XC, landing at Mifflin County Airport ~12 miles to the north.

Conditions were ideal. As predicted, wind direction was straight in with a velocity that was sufficient enough for everyone to stick but not blown out for Sam’s Falcon or Mike’s PG. The thermals were the highlight! While setting up, cumulus cloud streets were forming upwind. I found two lift lines along the ridge that were separated by ~ a quarter mile and both took me to over 5 K MSL.
