Daniels Road Maintenance

Post by mingram »

Officers of the CHGPA,

Good day. I am one of residents that share the residential easement along Old Mountain Road on Daniels Mountain in Stanardsville. I have lived here year-round since April 2014. I have observed, and had conversations with, many flyers over the years. The group members from the Capital Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association have been particularly pleasant during the brief exchanges along the road. There have been encounters with non-flyers that were not as pleasant. On the subject of the latter, there are a few people in the county that feel entitled to drive up the private road to the launch-point. I let people know, as politely as possible, that they are trespassing on their way up. Reactions vary. Many residents have collected trash (cans, bags, bottles) along the road, a couch was dumped, and numerous animals have been field dressed and their carcasses dropped. If you find it agreeable, would you ask the associated flyer groups not to accept or request transportation from the local residents along Snow Mountain Rd as it encourages their trespassing when there are no flyers around?

The high volume of rain last June washed out a lot of road and created several other issues. We are slowly fixing the issues, and making foundational repair actions before rock, gravel, and stone dust are applied for crowning. The described are taking place between the base of the mountain and the sharp turn off Old Mountain to my home. If you could notify those who have been granted permission not to disturb the work, it would be greatly appreciated. Our efforts are delayed each time drainage ditches are filled in before pipes can be installed. We understand the flyers prefer to drive up, but schedules and weather limit the time we can get this work completed. These setbacks delay all of us eventually enjoying dry, safe and passable roadways.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Michael "Chuck" Nagy
