You're both right, in your own way...

Hugh is right about Republicans and Democrats *in general*; but I have
to agree with Mark that when it comes to *politicians running for
office*, the gap is narrowing, as would-be office holders become more
moderate, in an attempt to win more of the middle-ground voters.
