We had a great day of aerotowing yesterday at Bluesky. The morning skies were not looking encouraging but it was the first day this year that aerotowing was available so everyone just went with it.
There were five of us in all. Peter Kane (max altitude at 4,500 by climbing the side of a cloud), John Shurte, Greg Sesa (on his new T2c), Chris Donahue (longest flight of the day about 2.5 hours on his Sport 2), and me on my new U2c.
Conditions were challenging with a strong inversion at 3,500 ft. Climbs were steady but not particularly strong and they took a lot of active piloting. The tows were very easy thanks to Lisa Kane, tug pilot extraordinaire.
Greg was first to tow. I took off fourth as Greg was landing. I was back on the ground a few minutes later as the flush cycle was ending. Lisa dropped me in a solid climb on my second tow and I climbed to 3,500 ft. Conditions were buoyant with plenty of pilots marking lift. I was able to range a few miles in each direction.
After a little more than an hour my arms were aching and I decided to do a victory lap and land. It seems other pilots had the same idea except for iron Chris Donahue who hung in for another half hour or so.
Lisa is taking a bit of vacation so it will be at least 3-weeks until there is another chance to aerotow. Hopefully the nasty rainy weather is behind us and we can get on with our flying season.
Fly safe, fly often
