Woodstock last Saturday

Woodstock was magic all day long. Went into the clouds at +7500ft amsl. Went over the gap, over the back dir Shenandoah, came back etc...just some local hopping. The magic lift stopped right at 8PM. I was getting hungry anyway...
For the PG this was the first nice weekend Woodstock day this year I believe.
Only one local HG showed up.

Just curious Tom, how did that HG pilot do at Wstock
on Sat 9 July ? Was strong at the Pulpit, but seemed
like it might be a bit light in VA for HG .

I never saw the HG myself, I only saw his car a an older brown pickup with a big ribbed black tube on it for the glider. The other PG said he landed in the field and got a lift back up with the PG.

There was no problem to launch for a HG whole day long.

The HG pilot did great, 3500 + over using thermal lift, 1hr of airtime.
I was the first off, had to land to get home to take care of domestic
responsibilities. I was worried that I was not going to get to fly
until the PG's showed. It would have been very tempting to break my
"never fly alone" rule.
The unisys meteogram that I looked at indicated a Woodstock day to me.
I was suprised that no other HG's were there. Apparently it was one of
those days that all the W, NW sites in the vicinity were working.

Randy,

I applaud you in your resistance to not fly alone. In my mind, it ranks right up there with admitting ones own misjudments and striving to do better the next time. Reminders like this help us others to 'remember' what we 'should' be doing. I see so many new pilots (not that you are one) doing things such as making accidental or poorly planned early XC's, then when they go far or don't get hurt they say 'way cool dude'. It's this kind of mentality that will eventually get us in big trouble. Thanks again for the 'reminder'.
