Blue Sky pilots at Hyner

Post by Scott »

For anyone going to Hyner this weekend, a couple of Blue Sky pilots---Bill Priday and Daniel Shapiro---are driving up today. They're both great guys and good pilots (H3s---both flying Sport 2s) looking to meet other pilots, have some fun, and get some mountain launch experience.

So please look them up and say hello! (They'll be camping at the LZ.) I wish I could be there, but I'm on a mission to aerotow this weekend!

Aerotowing can happen anytime - hyner 4th of july is only once a year!

For anyone else going, I'll probably camp at the Pulpit thursday night,
and would be happy to have company.

Aah, if only that were true! Alas---learning to aerotow, as I've discovered, cannot happen anytime. :? I've been waiting since last fall to do it, and the opportunities have been extremely few and far between. Admittedly, that's at Blue Sky, where Steve insists on a dead-calm, perfect evening or morning to do it (which down there are amazingly rare).

This weekend marks my last attempt at Blue Sky. If it doesn't happen, then I'm Ridgely- or Quest-bound!

I can take one passenger. I'm dithering between my original plan of
camping Thursday night at the pulpit or driving all the way up thursday
afternoon in hopes of catching some good NW on friday. But the
thunderstorms are seeming more likely on friday. A passenger who pays
half the gas will fix my choice. ;)

Blue Sky pilots at Hyner

I had the pleasure of doing late-day no-wind launches with Bill on
Sunday. We had arrived about 5 PM on Saturday after a 7-hour drive
(the scenic launch-site route: High Rock, Pulpit, Jacks - what a
gorgeous motorcycle ride - I couldn't fit in the car with the gliders,
camping gear, wife, kids and dog...) too late to fly but in time for
dinner and festivities (Brian has always advertised the wild and crazy
proceedings that "they" have at Hyner, but I learned that he is an
honorary board member and key instigator). After lollygagging around
all day (floating in the river; ice cream at the Lion's Den; I went
into town to find out about the old Piper Aircraft association with
Lock Haven) in the over-the-back conditions, I wandered up to Bill's
campsite around 6:30 and saw he was eyeing launch; proposed we set up
and see if the wind died. It was 8:30 by the time we were set up but
the over-the-back wind was still fairly constant; Bill, wearing his
harness, said it might not happen. I had been fiddling with gear and
hadn't taken a proper look at the flags and streamers, so I walked over
and glanced over the wall - streamers were (limply) straight in. Jim
Carroll had ridden his bike up the mountain (!) and agreed to provide
some local knowledge and to read the flags for us. Bill got a no-wind
cycle as soon as he got on launch and had a clean take-off, so I
figured it could be done, but it took me 10-15 minutes to get the
right combination of limp flags, streamers neither left nor right cross
and no wind on either cheek for a clean launch. It was twilight in the
valley; cars had their headlights on and I could see campfires in the
LZ glowing brightly against the dusky background. There was a crowd of
about 30 spectators waiting expectantly (no launch director - the
locals had bailed on the day) - plus my wife and kid on either wingtip
begging me not to commit suicide. I guess the suspense made the sled
ride really sweet at this spectacular site. I had a "perfect" landing
after several long upwind/downwind legs as I tried to make out which
way the flags were tending (it was pretty dead at ground level in the
LZ but the prevailing east wind blowing through the valley was quite
evident higher up). Having commenced drinking, I was still packing up
my glider by flashlight at midnight. We began the long drive home
Monday after breakfast at the Sportsmen, took a look at Jack's (STFI
but my family didn't want to wait for me to fly). Good first
introduction to Hyner. Will bring more gear next time: there's a
water trail down the Western Branch of the Susquehanna (see
http://www.baygateways.net) which would make a great canoe/kayak trip. - Hugh
