New Years Eve to Jan 3

Post by Ward Odenwald »

It’s early but all four days could bring decent soaring conditions to the Pulpit and/or Woodstock. I’m betting that Saturday may be the best but willing to fly on two of the four. Plus, air-temps are not predicted to be insane - so who’s thinking about flying?

I am definitely interested and Satuday sounds best for me, but will be able to go flying on Friday too.

Ghost, after 1 week flying in Brazil (90F!), it would be hard to push myself out of bed and fly when temperature is around 30F :(
However, if the conditions are waltable and above freezing, I would love to see my fellow pilots and fly at Pulpit.
Thursday looks promising...hopefully, the weekend will be also good.

I'm interested. If nothing else I can help launch and drive if needed.

Not an easy call. Here’s my impressions as of the noon forecasts:

The Pulpit @ 1pm -> Great wind direction all 4 days but only Sunday has predicted wind speeds just below 20 mph at 2K msl with the rest looking blown-out or close to it.

Woodstock @ 1pm -> Tomorrow, looks flyable (280-degree wind direction and 15 mph at 2K msl) but with significant overcast. Friday is also predicted to be overcast with 2K msl winds from 270 at 10 mph. Saturday – same wind direction as Friday but clear and 14 mph at 2K. Sunday; clear, 280-degree direction with 6 mph at 2K.

Any suggestions? I'm waiting for the 6 pm updates.

Headed to WS tomorrow. I'll meet Tim and possibly Juan at the Woodstock McDonalds at 10:00-10:30. Knut, Walt, Dave and Blaine let me know if you're in for tomorrow. Hoping for 2 plus days of flying this extended weekend.

Ward,
Sorry, but can't go tomorrow , Thursday, Dec 31. However, can go on Friday or Saturday. Prefer WS on Saturday, if forecast is good. Looks like Bacil and Charlie might be coming too on Sat, to WS, if again forecast corporates with us. Will keep you posted. Knut

Ward,
I cannot fly this Thursday PM.
However, I am looking forward to flying this Fri, Sat, and/or Sun if the conditions are "waltable."

If I do not see my fellow pilots tomorrow, I wish you all a happy new year!

I got a call from Ward's wife late last night saying he was not feeling well and would not be flying on Thursday. We will see you another day.

We did not fly. The wind was barely blowing. Ironically, I have been flying for the past 3 years and have never been to Woodstock. Ward gave me the lay of the land. I hope to be back soon.

Will not be flying on Saturday at WS. Seems to be too much cross wind and more tomorrow... . Though, are now planning w/ Bacil to go flying on Sunday afternoon, during peak hours, 1-3PM at WS. Will know for sure on Sat evening. Hopefully it will work out for us. There might be a window of opportunities at Pulpit tomorrow afternoon, Sat too; but are gambling on WS for Sunday.Knut

Looking at the forecast for tomorrow, Sunday. Seems like we might have a chance to get a good flight at WS tomorrow. 50/50. One place the forecast for WS looks OK, is at windyty. Anybody interested? Planning to be there at 11 a.m and please let me know if interested. So fare it looks like I have one pilot that wants to give it a try.

Knut, I'm packed and ready to go to WS but this morning Nostepper is indicating that conditions may be very good at the Pulpit (winds at or below 20 mph @ 2.5K) by 2 pm. Based on the success at the Pulpit yesterday afternoon and yesterday's windyty forecast for the Pulpit, it appears that windyty may be estimating wind speed on the the "high side". Last Thursday, windyty indicated soarable afternoon conditions at WS and the max wind speeds we measured at launch were very brief puffs of 10 to 12 mph with the majority readings at 5 to 7mph. Unless I hear a convincing argument for WS, I'm going to the Pulpit.
