Pulpit Saturday 11/7

Post by Dunegoon »

Some nice flying for those who showed up.

Ridge soaring and smooth thermals under the overcast. Bacil launched first and had a good launch and flight. I launched shortly after and had a very satisfying 2 hour flight in nice ridge lift and numerous climbs in a house thermal by the primary LZ. The launch area also provided some lifty air. Reliable thermal lift to 3500msl and climbing almost tempted me OTB. I wish it would have been more turbulent (for higher thermal lift) but it was mostly just fun relaxing flying. Lots of birds to follow and play with also made it cool.

Good radio communications with Bacil and a reminder that we had to launch two H2s later in the day brought me out to the LZ. It would have been easy to fly ALL afternoon. After a good approach I let my nose pop in the last few seconds and had a clumsy high flare without flair landing. I wanted to change my transition slightly and it was NOT a good idea. Back to what works.

This inspired me to fly again and do some aerobatics with my RC Zagi. The lift was so good I could continually roll and even soar inverted. We launched Dave G. for his first flight with his Sport 2 and he did well. Then we launched Eric G. in his big Falcon to float around in what was becoming magic air. Nice job Eric! I launched again and enjoyed another half hour flying almost to sunset. What a great damn day of flying and comradery. Thanks to those who showed up to help launch, Dave B., Walt M., John and Eric's friend. Sorry if I forget any other helpers.

That weather rock does work.

Charley pretty much summed it up. My flight was nice and fun. A nice launch at 11A, zooming effortlessly around the bar area in lift lines to the NW, and a quick ridge run down to The Corner aided by a quartering tailwind. However, I knew that it would be a difficult trip back and that I might not make it all the way. The first half of the trip back towards launch was OK, but the last half was on the treetops. Made it to the gas line clear cut, but I was really low and a strong headwind convinced me to go out to land in the main LZ at noon. Really happy that Dave Gills and Eric Kriner, 2 Hang 2 pilots from Western and Central PA, were able to fly and soar under our combined tutelage. But what was awesome was that Eric brought along a friend Ron who had goggles that received a live video feed from a camera mounted on the centerline of Eric's keel just aft of the nose. So during Eric's nice soaring flight we could look into the goggles and see what Eric was seeing live. Too cool! 8) Bacil
