Amazon and google want new airspace for UAS

Post by pink_albatross »

article here: http://awin.aviationweek.com/ArticlesSt ... fault.aspx

excerpt:

Amazon wants this:
Segregated airspace zones below 500 ft. altitude
Delegated responsibility for air navigation services
Best-equipped, best-served UAS access to airspace = “best-equipped, best-served” model where airspace access is determined by vehicle capabilities, and outlines four classes of equipage: basic, good, better and best.
“Managed by exception” air traffic management

Google wants this:
Airspace service providers (ASP) are interface between UAS operators and ATC
UAS traffic planning, monitoring, separation assurance by ASPs via cellular networks
UAS give way to manned traffic, using ADS-B In for collision avoidance
Short-range UAS-to-UAS collision avoidance via “ADS-B-like” system (e.g., V2V)

nothing about impacting PG, HG, sailplanes, GA (what about UAS to VFR traffic avoidance?), balloons, ultralights...

I know this has been in the works, but seeing the details about what Amazon and Google are asking for makes it feel much more concrete. The vision of robots flying over our heads with packages will become a reality soon and then it won't be a big deal, but right now it feels so strange.

Thanks for sharing Ellis. Keep fighting for free flight!
