Hyner 40th Anniversary, July 4

Hello All;

I wanted to start advertising Hyner View's 40th Anniversary party, this 4th of July. We'll have all the normal shenanigans (statue of Liberty, Spoons, etc), a meal catered by local establishments (not Sportsman's), and I can't resist showing you the T-shirt design (also available as a hoodie) which will only be available at Hyner.

The river's great, the mountain is always launchable, the beer's cold, come have a great time!

For those not familiar with Hyner, L&V with some prediction of thunderstorms is a good forecast. Everyone will launch, some thermals may take you to the moon.

Interested. Possibly coming up Friday afternoon, but I have to leave Saturday afternoon (going on family vacation to OBX Sunday).

I was hoping to go to the 40th anniversary celebration, but the current forecast for easterly winds on Friday and southerly winds on Saturday with scattered thunderstorms and a 60% chance of rain is giving me second thoughts. If I go, I will also take my rec kayaks in anticipation of floating the river since the prospects for flying at Hyner this weekend appear to be limited. Still, you don't know if you don't go!

I'm getting a northerly forecast for Saturday, with rain in the AM, and an excellent WNW forecast for Sunday.

Also, Friday's SE forecast shouldn't rule out Hyner, as it is launchable and soarable in any direction, if you count the NE launch across the valley.

So I ended up bailing on the Hyner Fly-in and that probably resulted in some good flying conditions, but I'd be curious to hear how the weekend actually turned out? Shawn told me the river was pretty high and the beach was underwater so hanging out in the water wasn't going to be a viable option. That, and the easterly wind forecast, pretty much squashed my enthusiasm, although it appeared that rain cleared out for their Saturday night catered dinner.

I arrived about 10:30 Thursday night. David & Jodie arrived Friday; John & Marnie came in Saturday.
Early Friday between 10 and 11 there were three no/light wind launches with sleds. then nothing worth setting up for the rest of the day. I drove up three times that day, and never bothered unloading a glider.
Forecast was for rain to start after midnight Friday, and it did. I slept nicely in my tent listening to the heavy rain. But in the a.m. it kept raining into the morning, then heavy overcast and some fog into the day. Three more sleds about 5:30 Saturday, as supper was being set up. All were launches in lulls of the over the back.
Sunday the forecast was sunny and west at 5. So much for Accuweather - it was SSE to S all day. a LOT of us set up, but only about half flew - all sleds and all launches during lulls of the dump. Long waits on launch for a launchable trickle. I broke down about 4. John M. was still reading next to his c glider, waiting to decide whether to fly.

Good party, with tons of catered food. Good social weekend but pretty poor flying.

Major kudos to Brian for organizing the weekend.

Hyner was a great time. awesome turn out too. Most crowded I've seen it in years! weather was awesome....( rained like hell Friday night but...) Saturday was beautiful as was Sunday and Monday. Didn't fly.....but camping was great and we kayaked the river. Hung out with Charlie and Tim mostly....and Jill and I stayed an extra day and left the LZ with only a few folks left. Saturday nights antics were just like days of old.....guitars, bonfires, spoons, fireworks, Chinese lanterns, and of course Preacher Dave doing the Statue of Liberty for......I've heard...the last time.
I've been going there since 1978. It is a very, very special place and has been a shining star in my life. Thank you Brian Vant-Hull for being the Prez. and for Shawn for being a driving force...and Bob Beck and...and....and....all those who made Hyner.....well, Hyner.
I walked around there all weekend and Saturday night. I have so many memories of being there. I was 19 or 20 when I first went there. There were many ghosts....all good.....some bittersweet. The aging of the crowd concerns me. Saw the same thing at Wallaby. I tried not to let that ruin the moment. Very, very special time...once again. A special place...special people. May Hyner always be that special place.....
