So the NWS hourly is calling G20 between 2:00 and 4:00 at Highland. Wondering if it might make sense to try HRock (WNW until noon, then W), and then hit the road for Highland by 2pm or so? I know Dennis S is hoping to do a tandem at HR tomorrow...
OTOH, the NWS text surface casts have no mention of a gust factor at either site. Which might argue for getting to Highland early in the hopes that conditions will be OK for a while.
Pulpit could work, but I think it will be one of those days to launch no later than 10am. Increasing forecast too.
It will be party-on at Highland regardless, can't wait!
What are people thinking?

I will be at the Pulpit tomorrow before 11A. No cause for major alarm. Of course the wind will increase during the day. WSW at Hagerstown according to weather.com. Bacil

Re: Mtn options Sat25Oct
Geez, I didn't plan things very well at all. Just finished that pasta salad for the Highland party, and haven't even *started* to load SUVie with the light 'em up goodies. So I'm thinking that it might be a straight-to-Highland day for me tomorrow.
Pulpit hourly is calling for G22 (sfc) between 1pm and 4pm. No mention of any gust factor in the text 'cast, go figure! So hopefully there will be some decent launch conditions in the AM, prior to any ramp up. But unless I wake up with an improbable burst of energy at the crack-o-dawn... I'm pretty doubtful for either Pulpit or High Rock.
Apologies for the bait-and-switch guys!

(Maybe H-Rock, if there's a lot of chatter about it tomorrow. That's only an hour and change for me...)

Way cross at High Rock. No thanks. Bacil

Got to the Pulpit around 11A. Krzyzstof arrived just before me. Already soarable, and a nice cloud deck of cumuli was heading our way from the west. We waited for Walt Melo to show around 12:15P with his wife Kayla. I promptly staged on launch soon after Walt arrived. Once I yelled clear I took a step for the walk, jog, run progression. Then I started jogging with the 2nd step. The control frame suddenly got pushed down to the gravel pad. I yelled an expletive and forged on with the launch run. Fortunately everything worked out and I flew away from the mountain with no worries. In the air it was cross from the SW. Krzyzstof launched about a half hour later and we shared the air for a while. The cumuli cloud deck was evaporating as soon as it reached Rt. 522, which made for a frustrating time for both Krzyzstof and I. A flush cycle set in and snared Krzyzstof by Rt. 16. I survived staying to the north around launch. I finally found a cohesive thermal which got me to 3600' MSL and I went with it between launch and Rt. 16. Between Cove and Tuscarora Mts. it was very turbulent. Finally around the Mt. Parnell fish ponds I found another thermal that got me to 5100+' MSL as I drifted past Broad Mt. drifting ENE. My goal was the Chambersburg Airport. I was getting pretty cold at 5100' so I left the thermal and headed towards where the airport was perceived to be. Long story short I ran out of air around 2 miles SSW of the airport off of Shatzer Orchard Road. Walt and his wife picked me up within a half hour of landing. Thank you Walt! Back at launch we assisted Denis Sheely and his tandem passenger to a good takeoff at around 5:30P in strong conditions on the pad. Walt made the command decision to not fly and I applaud him for that. Bacil
Re: Mtn options Sat25Oct
Does anybody know when the last tandem flight from the pulpit was? In the near future, my partner and I are looking to do more flights from high sites in the Region 9 area. My partner is an up and coming Hang-1 pilot, and I recently received my Tandem-1 from Paul Voight up in Ellenville, NY. (Paul gives an excellent seminar if anyone is interested receiving a tandem rating.)
Our flight at the pulpit was fun and exciting. As Bacil noted, winds were strong at about 15 to 20mph W, slightly NW. We flew down to Rt.16, and it took about 15 minutes. I was trying to avoid lots of turns to help my partner from getting air sick. While we enjoyed the flight, I chose to do a 180 degree turn and headed back to launch where we saw a couple of people who helped us launch watching us. We got over to LZ and did a perfect wheel-landing.
Thanks to Bacil and Walt for helping with the launch, and Kayla for giving us a ride back!
We hope to see everybody out flying again!
