Woodstock Saturday 4/26

Post by XCanytime »

Forecast doesn't get much better. Mid 70's and WNW winds in the double digits. I may head further SW to fly at Big Walker or Eagle Rock. Bacil

Greetings Bacil,
Thank you for the head's up on your intentions for Saturday. If you head that way it would be great to catch up with you for some flying. Can you briefly explain proper procedure for flying Eagle Rock? Does it require 4-wheel drive to get to the NW launch? Do HG pilots meet at a gathering place first to negotiate vehicles/transport? Is the primary LZ for the NW side HG friendly as far as terrain and size? I have renewed my Skywackers membership so I believe I am set in that department. Thx Much ...::Jim

Jim,
Good to hear from you. On second thought I will most probably end up going to Woodstock Saturday. I do not know the specifics about Eagle Rock, but Jon has flown there recently. Hope to see you at Woodstock Saturday.

Best Regards,
Bacil

Hi Bacil, I contacted Larry D. about Eagle Mtn. It takes a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get to launch and key for the gate. Generally pilots meet in the SE or NW LZ before heading up. Most of the pilots are PG but sometimes Larry brings his trailer for HGs if contacted in advance. The NW LZ varies depending upon crop status but the most used one is large and reasonably flat (but I can guess that you would be going XC anyway!). Larry was very helpful and informative. The SE LZ is as Jon described in an earlier posting .. open and rolling.

If Woodstock is looking reasonable for Saturday, I'll see you there and save Eagle Rock for another day.

I'm supposed to meet up with a rep. from Shenandoah County tourism tomorrow at Woodstock to mount their wide angle Go-Pro camera onto my glider. However, the current forecast is 15-20-- gusts to 35.

Ugh.

The Daniel's clean-up is also on Saturday.

How accurate are the forecasts for Woodstock generally?
Any chance of the forecast being updated tomorrow to show it mellowing late in the day (and without over-development showers)?

Jim, many of us have been searching the matrix for years - looking for just that "updated tomorrow". If it happens, expect others to notice and start thinking that you can "bend the cast". I hope it happens but the as of now it looks like its going to ramp-up to 30+mph later in the day.

The latest from weather.com has it mellowing after 5PM. I'm going to hope for a late PM sunset flight. Bacil

Going to do some hang driving and exploration with Bacil and see how the day develops. Maybe try to catch a late day/ evening flight if things work out with the weather. Will be on launch checking things out, about 330pmish

thanks,
Jon

Short version- launched John Dullehan into strong condition at approx 2 pm. He landed after a brief flight reporting turbulence and having to work to penetrate on his topless! Hang waited for a few hours then left with Jon B., Bacil and Gary S. on launch.
