I had an opportunity to meet and fly with the wonderful folks down at Eagle Rock on Sunday and had a great time. The Skywackers are a great club and a very friendly group of pilots. A Big thanks to Larry Dennis for giving me a great site into and showing me the area in depth. Larry was an awesome host!!! Thank you!
The site is really neat and takes both a SE and NW with two launches in walking distance. Sweet!! I flew the SE side yesterday but am very much looking forward to getting back down to fly the much steeper NW side.
Yesterday the winds were much stronger than predicted but there was still plenty of soaring to be had. A couple PGs got some nice flights in before things ramped up pretty strong. I flew and had an enjoyable first flight, staying mostly 100'-350' over launch, flying fast in the strong, south cross, choppy air. Big thanks to Greg for driving my car down the mountain to pick me up. Thank you man!!! Things finally mellowed out and straightened back up, and all the PGs had really nice end of the day flights.
I look forward to flying with the Skywackers again.

Re: Eagle Rock 4/6/14
Greetings Jon,
How would you rate the landing area on the SE side for hang gliders? Any potential for a little XC on that side?
If there are any SE days while I am in Virginia at the end of the month ... I might be game for heading down to Eagle Rock.

Hey Jim,
The LZ is a large rolling field. Plenty big for an HG, you just have to be mindful that you end up on a section going up rather than down. I believe there is XC potential there as I am sure on the right day the whole knobby valley is a big thermal producer.
I would definitely recommend flying there while you are here. The Skywackers are a great group. Get in touch with Larry Dennis and he will get you squared away there. Let me know if you are going to head down there and I will try to join.
Look forward to flying with you,
Jon

Thx Jon for the scoop on the SE side LZ. Big Walker also looks like fun place to fly (another place with a rolling LZ). I remember Bacil reporting on exciting flying there last year. I'll let you know if we head down that way.
Catch up with you soon.
