Weekend flying - Bills Hill cleanup - Camping Saturday

Post by mingram »

I have a free weekend and the forecast is looking pretty good. I'm up for flying both days and camping Saturday night if it looks like it will be good on Sunday. Anyone else free this weekend?

Saturday is looking like it could be good at Bills Hill again. NOAA shows NE early, but turning E later in the afternoon. If this holds I intend to arrive early to do some site cleanup and soar in the afternoon. XC Skies shows top of lift to 7k in PA on Saturday so it looks like the better XC choice at the moment. However the windmapper forecast just changed and now shows that the wind will be too weak in PA and better in VA at Flattop. Not sure what changed.

Sunday turns SE/S. Could be good at Fisher Road, Edith's Gap, or Daniels.

I am free tomorrow and game if Bills forecast still looks promising. Could make it out in the AM to help clean up and go from there.

Right on. Wind direction looks ok at Bills, but weak. We're debating a field trip to Spruce Knob, WV to fly a new site. I'll let you know what we decide later this evening.

It seems like there is significant interest in flying Spruce Knob tomorrow. It would be really fun to camp and fly both days.

Playing Devil's advocate... the XC forecast looks good at Bills with top of usable lift at 7500 feet. Ahhhhh! So hard to decide!

I'm torn. I'm leaning towards XC at Bills, but if we have a good group wanting to spend the weekend in WV I could be convinced to do that instead.

What's everyone else thinking?

I forgot we have tickets for the Legwarmers at the State Theater on Saturday night. I am thinking of Bill's as a result and I would leave early to be ready to launch before 12.

That said, if everyone decides to head to West Virginia, I'll make a long day trip. I have done it in the past for climbing at Seneca Rocks.

I'm planning a weekend at Bills/Fisher Road. You can camp in the Buchanan State Forest for free if only staying one night - no permit required. It might be a day to break 100k.

I will wait to do a camping/flying trip to Spruce Knob later in the Fall when the leaves turn.

Tom/Ben/Austin/George/Jim also plan to go to Bills. ETA 11:30 - although I'm hoping to get there earlier and leave some cars in the LZ.

Jacob, see you there.

Sounds great. Sorry I'll probably miss.

Forecast indeed looks promising, but the models diverge as of now. They seem to agree on winds, but they disagree on lift, mostly it seems because they disagree on how cloudy it will be. But my bet is that it will be sunny and really good. Don't forget to turn on your livetrack!

John Everett got his first mountain flight!

Wind was too light and most got sledders. I was the lucky guy who got away. 2 low saves over the LZ. Got to cloudbase at 7k feet msl. Flew 40k and 4:30 hours.

George is awesome and came to pick me up in Bedford and we're eating pizza.

Camping at Fisher launch tonight. The LZs are all covered in crops so hopefully there will be enough wind to soar.

Wow, way to go Matt, that's an awesome flight! Wish I was out there, but the winds just seemed too light for the plumbing this weekend....
