Pulpit; Friday, August 2nd

Post by Ward Odenwald »

Current forecasts are indicating that conditions will be very good on Friday with ridge soaring starting early! Right now the casts are calling for a 10 - 15 mph near straight in airflow for several hrs at launch before the thermal nonsense starts (ideal for H2s). Plus the primary LZ has recently been transformed back to our favorite field (see Middleton’s assessment). Willing to observe in the AM - in return for help with an early PM launch.

A bit windier than expected but a good direction for launching. Everyone flew and everyone soared. Ward launched first (1;30 - 2:00ish) and after a while went over the back for a little xc. Rich Elder was next to launch followed by Trevor (new h2) getting is first mountain and soaring flight (about 50 min). Bob Peterman then yours truly flew. Later in the day, Dave Bodner and Charley F flew. Some of the thermals were nice and some not so also some big sink at times. I flew over 1:30 and mostly 500 - 1000 above though I got 2k once or twice. Ward got some decent altitude when he went over the back.

He wasn't kidding when at the training hill the other day he said, "I'm done with the training hill. I'll see you in the mountains."

Awesome! Congrats.

Congratulations, Trevor.
There's nothing as thrilling as your first high flight. And to soar for almost an hour, too! Well done.
You're gonna need to hook up with some Observers from now until H3 and fortunately, one of the great things about this club is the number of Observers ready and willing to help.
Feel free to get a hold of any of us a day or two ahead of time and we can plan our day.
I look forward to seeing you out there!
Oh and in case nobody told you, the first club requirement is that you write up your experience on your first flight. No exceptions. :)

Launched at 6:07. Nice evening flight with smooth consistent lift. 500+ over, flew up and down the ridge easily. The bowel past the power lines produced magic smooth air. Wished I had some company to fly with. Used my go-pro for the first time and got some "oh so boring" video. Downloaded the video, vario, GPS tracking, statistics, baragraph, Google earth, still shots, 8x10 glossy color photos, plaster tire tracks of the "landing area" (just kidding) and logged them for posterity. Final duration only 1:10, but if I flew much longer I might have been walking back to launch. Thanks for waiting Dave!

Had 1000 over the LZ, flew a nice pattern with only a little wobble on final to beak my landing EXACTLY on the target spot. Wish my Go-pro would have recorded that event but the batteries conveniently died a few minutes before. Not bad, but it would be nice to have a better landing after a fun flight. I need some concentrated pattern and landing practice in the mountains.

Congradulations Trevor! Great to meet you Rich! Thank you John and Ward.

Looks like the SW curse hase been lifted, so get ready to do some flying!

Good day at McConnellsburg. I’m betting that Trevor is still wearing the same smile that his near hour-long flight triggered – Congratulation! Here are some photos of the day with two showing Trevor just before launch and climbing above.
