Status of Smithsburg?

Post by Richard Hays »

Drove by there last week. Hillside is completely baled off. Did not stop to see if sign has been flipped to öpen" as I had a car right on my bumper as I crested the hill. Have been trying to get ahold of Eddie but he's not answering his phone and the machine is turned off apparently. Anybody know the status? Would like to go out there this weekend.

Ok; update 10/19/12 at 3:30pm. Smithsburg is NOT yet open. Got ahold of Eddie and he has to see the landowner first. There is a crop of alphalfa at the bottom of the hill and it needs to be cut and baled before we go out there. Or one assumes. So....hoping to hear something asap but as of this writing...the 'burg is NOT open.

Rich, glad you were able to find out. Maybe it will open in a couple of weeks. Kirshner's Knob is always available and as of a few weeks ago was in good condition because of my mowing.

To the best of knowledge; Smithsburgh is still not open. I would imagine the heavy rains from Hurricane Sandy saturated the LZ field and delayed the cutting of the alfalfa crop until such a time that one can get a tractor in there without rutting up the place.

Eddie told me that he would be attempting to reach Kirk to see when we could expect to be able to access the site. His first attempt was unsuccessful in locating him. Eddie is trying.

So...until we know for sure....please stay off the site. If we trample his crop....it could close the hill. I would expect it would be open by November 10th which historically it does on or about mid November.

A student of mine stopped by on Sunday and the sign is still closed. It was too dark for him to see the status of the field.
