Shawn MacDuff Eager to do Tandems at High Rock

Post by brianvh »

Shawn was so impressed not only with the tandem launchability at High Rock but also with the high quality of wire crew, that he has decided he'd like to focus efforts on doing tandems there on a regular basis. Typically he does all his tandems at Hyner due to the nice slope launch, but can't get good ridge soaring conditions there, and has realized how much easier cliff launch is with a tandem pilot (if you can get them past the fear factor).

This is great news for the Baltimore/DC area. There's a lot of tandem activity going on at Hyner, and I can say from watching scores of them that you will not find a safer, more conscientious tandem pilot than Shawn. He also provides unmatched rapport while in the air, and you'll hear them joking as they fly over the breakdown area to set up an approach. As longtime president of the Hyner Club he's a big proponent of landowner relations, and has offered a free tandem to Randy's very excited girlfriend. More may follow as word gets out to the extended family.

If you know someone who is interested in taking a mountain tandem, contact shawn@hynerclub.com. Since he's not a High Rock regular he'll need you to keep him informed on conditions both of weather and LZ and availability of qualified wire crew. His standard prices will range from $85 to $100, (I won't specify a number in his behalf). Also remember he's a big boy himself and the LZ ain't right below, limiting the size of passengers he can take to around 185 lbs I believe.

Randy's gf was talking about it at the campfire long after you guys hit the road. She also watched him do a tandem launch and observed his skill and smoothness at launch... I think she may have been comparing him to the previous pilot who was going off the rock for the first time?
