CHGPA Spring Business Meeting Minutes – March 1, 2012

Below is a summary of the CHGPA Spring Business meeting. This was held both in the flesh and also over webcast. There is a link to the webcast on the forum and I encourage all members that were unable to attend either in person or over the web, to watch it. The below info is not comprehensive……watch the video ☺

Pay your club dues if you have not done so yet. Paypal is fully operational. At $40 a year you are getting a good bargain and helping to protect and advance our love of free flight!!

Some upcoming dates to put on your calendars. These will also be added to the “2012 Competition and Events List” accessed from the forum.

July 14th-15th, 2012- Pulpit Fly-In and Summer Social meeting

September 7th, 2012- Autumn Meeting

September 15th-16th , 2012- High Rock Fly-In

December 7th, 2012- Christmas party

March 7th, 2013- Spring Business Meeting

Woodstock Launch Discussion-
Dan T states that although more intensive operations that require the use of chainsaws and improving the trail up to launch might be delayed by Forest Service approval, we can still use mechanical devices (loppers, clippers…etc) to improve and maintain the launch area without having to ask. His feeling is that this is a “Forest” with a mindset that it is to be used by many and for much, as opposed to a “Park” which is much more regulated and conservation driven.

Edith Gap Launch-
Some discussion that it would be nice to continue efforts to get this site reopened. There is an issue with removing the invasive tree species that is present there, which complicates matters.

High Rock-
Huge thank you to all the individual supporters that helped with the launch steps and the driveway to the LZ!! Also big thanks to the Free Flight Foundation for footing half the bill. There was quite a bit of discussion about the possibility of opening this site to Paragliding. There are efforts being made to identify and contact a certain landowner that might provide access to a PG launch there. Stand by for further.
There was also quite a bit of discussion about the future of the LZ at High Rock. Stand by for future talks about a fund raiser to help raise money to pay the taxes that Emma Jane has to pay on the field ($2400 annually). The lack of flying there in recent years has hurt the income Emma Jane was receiving from donating pilots that used fly the site regularly.

Tree Rescue Clinic-
Stand by for future discussions about setting up a tree rescue clinic this year

Observer Training Meeting??
There was a concern brought up that observers are sometimes hard to get for H2s (maybe P2s also??). There might be a need to appoint /train more observers so we can assure that newer pilots are not being turned away. On a decent day there should be someone available to observe these pilots all the time.

Spring safety meeting-
Tom McGowan brought up some good points about spring safety. Some of the highlights were that the spring (starting now) can be quite different from the rest of the year. Conditions can be pretty strong and if you are a newer pilot or someone that has not flown in a while…..then be prepared. Feel free to ask the more experienced pilots what they think about the conditions.
When planning to go XC, feel free to ask more experienced pilots their advice on conditions, strategies and tactics. If you are new at it, don’t venture off without a plan. Link up with our more experienced XC pilots. No questions are stupid questions. DanT talked about spectator safety at launch sites and landing zones. Be diligent about making sure the spectators cannot get involved in a negative way. High Rock has a high potential for this kind of incident. Make sure the block is completely clear before you move into launch position.

USHPA Insurance Premiums-
Stand by for some possible increases in all our USHPA dues relating to increasing premiums from our underwriters. There have been some incidents nationwide that have involved spectator injury that is of concern to our underwriters’. DanT does not believe any of these incidents were in our Region 9

CHGPA Officer Election-
All current officers were re-elected for another term.
