Smithsburg and/or High Rock/Pulpit for Tues Jan 24th

Post by sailin »

Looks like the west winds will blow again on Tuesday. Even some sunshine and some warmer air to accompany it. The velocity may be up on the higher side.....but it seems like like Smithsburg could work all day, and at some point during the day either High Rock or the Pulpit might work. I know its midweek but................Who's In ???????????????

You might want to call someone up there and see whether the hill is a sheet of ice or not. If it is, then ice-sledding is lots of fun!

Hmm. Jon, I might have to bail on you due to a schoolwork piling up. :(

Arrived at 11AM to find Peter H. there with first time student Anika??. They had gotten there earlier an enjoyed some lighter conditions for Anika's first lesson. Nice to chat with you Peter and congratulations to Anika for getting started in free flight!!! Wind speed started to pick up a bit just after I arrived. I found it to be 12-15mph up top out of of the WSW. I started setting up. After i was finished setting up I went up top with the Hall Speed Indicator to see what was happening as you could hear a difference in the air...............20mph consistent with frequent gusts to 27mph....... a little strong and gusty for me. I chilled for a bit, resting and reading, until things sounded like they calmed down a bit. About 45 minutes later they did. It was now blowing about 8-12mph out of the WSW with some straighter more W cycles thrown in there. I had 3 very nice flights. The LZ was slippery and soft mud.......no steppers mandatory  After my third flight I called it quits as the wind direction had firmly switched to a more WSW- SW direction.....the opposite of what it was supposed to do  Overall a very enjoyable day and some good exercise.

Glad you had a productive day, Jon. It was nice and warm out!! I was kicking myself for not getting my work done earlier in the week. Maybe the possibility of flyable days will help me stop procrastinating so much. ;)
