Woodstock Friday Dec 23rd (early flight)

Post by sailin »

Checking to see if anyone can get away for an early flight tomorrow (Friday) at Woodstock. Looks like it might be on the cloudy side but certainly not as cold as last weekend. I'd have to be packed up and on the road home by 1245......gotta be back for family holiday commitment. I was thinking of getting to launch around 930ish......trying to get in the air early.

Anyone else?

I'm considering flying tomorrow, but it's going to be a last minute decision due to potential work restraints. Will check the weather and postings in the a.m...

I'm off. Let's fly.

I could meet you there early and we could get a vehicle in the LZ.

I was considering it, but winds aloft and gust factor look too strong for my falcon. :|

Hope you guys have a good day!

Mission accomplished for me today :D had a nice, short soaring flight at Woodstock today and made it home in time to make my family holiday commitment!!! Pretty interesting sky there today with everything from massive wave clouds, some blue sky, complete cloud cover, rainbows and even a little light rain for a minute!!! Thanks to Dan Tuck and Greg Sessa for meeting me early in the LZ. You guys were rippin it up when I left,,, would love to hear your stories........also Daniel, Carlos, and Randy.

We are eeeking everything we can out of this December!!!!!!!

Merry Christmas,

Jon

Glad it worked out! I'm curious about the conditions. What was the velocity like at launch and at altitude?

I had a very enjoyable 90 minute flight. It was a little gusty early (~15) but mellowed out as the day went on.

Flew nearly the entire ridge, up from launch to just past the reservoir and then down to just north of the gap and back. I never got higher than 1300 over, but I wasn't working the thermals that hard: I'm sure the others got higher. As Jon mentioned, there was a lot of interesting weather to be watched. I also shared some close airspace with a bald eagle which is always such a treat. Hope everyone has good flights tomorrow.

Best,
Daniel

I’m arrived around 9:45 am to find Dan and Jon in the LZ ready to make the trek up to launch. We began setting up while finding 10 to 15 mph winds straight in, with the occasional gusting. We observed pretty heavy cloud cover with minimal sun at first. As we were about fully set up, we even felt a few rain drops which fortunately passed quickly. The sun then started to peak through the clouds leaving a rainbow in front of launch. We got suited up after Carlos, Daniel and Randy arrived, and Jon set off with the first launch of the day. I took off second to find very nice conditions in the sky and constant lift along the ridge. I had to work a bit at first, but managed to top out around 2,000 ft over launch and landed after about an hour long flight. It was nice to cruise around the ridge, and also getting to fly with several feathered friends who were busy roaming the sky as well. And it was very cool to see Dan occasionally moving into the valley to pull off some nice wingovers. All in all, it was a great day for all who flew!
