Villa Grove Colorado

Post by Dan T »

I got to fly the Rockies at Villa Grove Colorado yesterday. It's a majestic high mountain site with launch at 9,800 and the LZ at about 8,200 I think. I got 30-40 minutes in choppy conditions in the PG. My good friend Mike C., former CHGPA member joined me in his topless HG. Conditions were better suited to flying a HG, but I managed to enjoy myself by staying relatively low and staying out front.

A day earlier I hiked, without a wing, to a site just outside of Colorado Springs. Beautiful spot, at 9,200 feet, 800 feet above the trail head on a narrow path that would require a really dedicated person to fly a HG.

Dan--
From the exchange on permit for flying in Nat'l Parks, seems you are now in Colo Springs? Will you be heading west again, and does that include a west track via Salida/Gunnison/Montrose/etc ? If so, plan on flying Willow Creek above Blue Mesa Rsvr a few miles W of Gunnison. Nice flying... (I think we flew in a west wind) both PG and HG, top-landable. If you do go that way, I could rummage up 2--3 names of PG pilots, maybe. --John

John,

I just got an invite to fly Lookout Mountain near Golden. I'll be there today and probably heading out I70 to Moab tomorrow. I think I flew Willow Creek several years ago. Strong winds, top landed more than 1/2 mile back of the cliff face for fear of rotors.
