Late afternoon flights (after 4:00 pm take offs) - over the back at the Pulpit:
Ellis: got to intersection of route 63 and I70 (near Huyett) - there was a cloudstreet that started at the Hagerstown airport and continued directly over Hagerstown. I longingly looked at it and then elected to avoid the prohibited airspace and with a heavy heart tried to traverse blue space to the west. Top altitude around 6000 ft MSL, about 22 miles.
Tom: landed 3 miles south of exit 20 on I 81 - Berkely, WV (Martinsburg), top altitude around 2000 Meters MSL. If you don't want to look it up, that's around 40 miles. Just a pleasant little walk in the park for Tom.
Ben: also landed near Martinsburg (about 40 miles)- and did so the whole way at about 3500 MSL!!! If that boy ever gets a higher performance wing, he'll probably end up in North Carolina (good luck with the retrieve )
Maybe Tom and Ben will give some details on their flights.

Excellent flights. Hopefully more of the same tomorrow at the Pulpit. Being the anal engineer, Tom's distance is more like 30 miles. 40 would have had Tom below the SE border of Martinsburg airspace 4 miles north of Charles Town. Nonetheless, good to see some XC going on at the Pulpit. Bacil

Okay. Sorry about the mileage guess (btw, what is my mileage then? probably 15? ) Still a great flight for Ben and Tom!
I just looked it up: I could have flown over Hagerstown airport (ceiling of class D at 3200 feet), as I was comfortably flying at around 5000 ft MSL. But then would have still had the problem with Hagerstown (§103.15 Operations over congested areas: No person may operate an ultralight vehicle over any congested area of a city,
town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons.")
and I didn't know if P40 was extended or not.
Very curious to see what the XC pilots are going to do tomorrow! Do post, please!

Actually 21.5 miles, round it to 22 . Hagerstown Airport is at 704' MSL, hence the 2500' high 8 nautical mile diameter of restricted (what HGer/PGer carries an aviation band transmitter? ) Class D airspace above the airport. Bacil

Bacil
Is HGR different than other Class D where the radius of controlled airspace is 5 miles?
BTW, it's not illegal for Part 103 aircraft to enter Class D; you just need permission.
