Possibly... WNW 22+knts at 1700'+ for WS: probably too strong for me; but may be perfect for others. If the forecast dials the wind down more, though, I may be interested.
I was also thinking about Long Hill (a training hill near Luray not too far from WS). I've only flown there on light-wind days, and would like to try it on a day with a little more wind. I would need someone out there with me. I can give you directions, or we can meet in Stanardsville or Luray, depending on which dir. your coming from. ~Ann

Hi, Ann-

I think there's a very good chance the wind will back off in time for a very fun evening flight. Matthew Graham might be coming in the afternoon after working a half day: you might want to give him a call and see if he's available for/interested in observing.

Hope to see you there!

Best,
Daniel

NOAA/NWS for Woodstock: Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 68. Northwest wind between 8 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

Be careful out there if you fly bfore 5pm ... evening flights look doable.

And if you can make it to Gary's backyard for the CHGPA Cinco de Mayo party you'll get a huge award for the extreme RLF landing!

Based on the forecast for strong conditions -- and some unexpected work tasks -- I've decided to arrive late. Going to carpool with Matthew and Karen. As Matthew mentioned, we'll probably get there around 3:30.

Karen and I are out due to the high gust factor on the updated forecast. My gut feeling, however, is that it will back down after 5pm.

Good luck.

Oh, poo. I was hoping you would be there, Matt. The forecast is suppose to back down after 3pm.
I was going to plan to get there around 5pm... Reconsider, or anybody else?

I wasn't sure I'd be able to make it. I was just going to post that I would be coming when I saw your post. Only just found someone who could care for my son at the last minute. I'ts not a big deal. It wasn't meant to be. But I'll keep you in mind, next time.

I arrived around 3:30, to find Steve and Carlos helping Krzysztof carry his glider back to the set-up area after a blown launch. Krzysztof badly bruised his thigh but it did not appear he would need medical attention. He seemed calm and in ok spirits all things considered. The only damage to the glider was a broken downtube.

Beginning an hour later, Carlos, Me, Steve and the Gary launched in that order. I launched in a lull at 5pm and flew for 90 minutes: max alt just 1500 over. The first 500 feet or so was very bumpy, presumably due to a west cross, but it started to mellow after 6pm. I would have flown longer but landed in the bridge field when I saw Gary and Steve touch down.

Dinner and lies followed at the Mexican restaurant in Strasburg.

I'm out of town this weekend. Good luck in getting some airtime and be safe.

Best,
Daniel

Just few words regarding my blown lunch.
I have not achieved efficient air speed on lunch before running out of room to run, hitting the ground (rocks) hard and braking left down tub. Damage to my self include bruised ego, right thigh and minor scrapes of left knee. I am sure that Steve and Carlos can provide better annalizes. See you all at the Pulpit Fly In.

Krzysztof launched in a lull when there wasn't much wind at all and didn't have a good run. It had been cycling up and down pretty dramatically, up to 20 and down to 5. Perhaps the perception that it was a really windy day and didn't require a good run may have contributed.

Hope you are ok, Krzysztof.

"It had been cycling up and down pretty dramatically, up to 20 and down to 5. Perhaps the perception that it was . . ." - maybe, just maybe, not safe to launch/fly from a slot?

Was there any discussion between Krzysztof and his launch crew about this possibility?

Umm. Well, yes and no. He wanted to move the glider down a little and I told him, "well you certainly don't need much running room today" or something like that. I never thought to amend it or issue a warning as the wind died. Just being my usual helpful self.

We had an informal mention while we were setting up how the conditions were changing.
The potential to be too light. At that point there seem to be consistent base wind.

Krzysztof it sounds like you'll be back flying soon. Thanks for sharing.

These are spring conditions a reminder to all of us to be reasonably careful.
