Daniels 4/18 and/or 4/19

Looking a little ahead to Monday and Tuesday. Look SW - SSW for both days. Tuesday a little stronger. Hugh, would you be willing/available to observe me? If it's not too muddy...

Hi Ann,

Monday looks nicer in terms of sunshine vs overcast, a bit stronger wind, but maybe just enough for you to soar? My constraint is being back in the city for an evening class, but I think that fits with your babysitter schedule anyway. The limit on the morning is how long it takes me to fight my way through rush-hour traffic. Since the forecasts are so changeable in the spring, let's keep watching it. - Hugh

Thanks Hugh,

Yep, it has changed already, hasn't it. Looking at Monday afternoon: 2pm on, winds at 1700' and above, forecast to be in upper teens and twenties; too high for my current skill level. But a morning flight before Noon might work out. I'm thinking maybe I could get there and set up, and be ready to fly when you get there. If you could be there by 10:30 or 11am, I could give you a ride up when you get there.
Tuesday looks better for me in terms of consistant wind, and I don't mind the overcast if ceiling isn't too low.
What do you think?

Ann

NOAA has ramped up the forecast for Tuesday. So, Monday morning looking more doable. So far between the hours of 9am-1pm looks like the good window.
How did sailplaning go, Hugh??

OK, I'll beat my way out of DC tomorrow Monday as early as I can. Check in in the morning on cellphone. Ya, not much to choose between the wind velocities and the peak is right in the middle of the day on Tuesday, plus overcast and chance of thunderstorm. - Hugh

Will post a more detailed report later. Hugh suffered a broken leg as he was landing his PG in the main LZ. sometime around 2pm. The wind velocity was not an issue at all as it was SSE at about 5mph at the LZ. I watched his landing as far as I could until his glider was obscured by the hill, and then heard him hit the ground hard.
I reminded him to lay still. I called 911 and the ambulance arrived very shortly. He was airlifted to UVA shortly after.
He was conscious and very calm and coherent the whole time. I spoke with his wife Sallie to let her know what happened and where he is.
Send your prayers for his speedy recovery.

Oh damn, so sorry to hear about your accident Hugh! Will try to get in touch with you and Sallie to see if there's any way that I can help. And there's gonna be about a hundred people who want to do the same. So whatever it is, moving a vehicle, feeding a pet, helping with transport, recommending an ortho doc... Anything and everything, just say the word!

I called the hospital this morning, and they said he's is in stable condition. I plan to go visit him today. I will hold off my full report until deemed appropriate.

Quick update:
hours of surgery later the prognosis for Hugh's spine is looking good. Fingers crossed. At least he can still wiggle his toes.
I am deeply appreciative of Ann reminding Hugh to stay immobile while waiting for the ambulance!

Today the surgeons are going to tackle legs and wrist.
Looks like he'll be in the hospital for a while.

Hugh is hoping to get to his email soon. Hopefully he'll be able to update us himself soon, but I wouldn't expect anything before tomorrow.

Here's hoping all the surgeries go well and the prospect of a 100% recovery is looking good.

Hang in there, Hugh - AND Sallie!
and let us know if you need anything - Noah is already helping out. Thanks Noah!

Do you have hospital information, room number, etc.? Do you know if Hugh is taking phone calls?

Thanks,

I'll try to find out, Amy. I wouldn't expect he'd be up for visitors today though. I'll try to get info from Sallie this evening.
