Old Timer Bill Scott visits Baltimore

Post by Richard Hays »

Pretty scary when you call a 40 something guy an "old timer" but....then again....Bill started flying a long time ago. Young good looking kid. Going to college. Gets into hanggliding. Falls in love with flying. Makes career decision that horrifies parents. Becomes airline pilot. Its a classic tale.

Anyway...Bill Scott was a student of mine years ago and an avid MHGA member. Started out on an Eaglet if I recall and well...the rest is history. Him and a guy named Buddy John both got the idea that they should become commercial airline pilots and damn if they didnt. Bill flys for Delta and Buddy....I think for US Air ( are they still around? ).

So....for those of you that know Bill, he came into town Wednesday night. Had a layover. Called me up and we met down at Hooters in the Inner Harbor and had dinner ( there's a joke in there somewhere...use your imagination ). Havn't seen him in 20 years!

Bill told me lots of cool flying stories of his time in Utah, where he lives today. He's like.....40 minutes from Point of the Mountain and Ithink he said he lived in a ski town nearby. Park City? Bill won the Utah Cup XC competition by flying his Klassic 169 miles one year. Not to shabby. Sadly; he doesn't fly anymore. Hurt his rotor cuff and has some back issues. I'm trying to talk him into a Falcon but.......his heart is still into XC and he wasn't buying my sales pitch about how much more challenging it would be on a Falcon 3. LMAO.

Bill now spends his time traveling the world with his family. Cool stories about being in Cambodia, Argentina and other places. He's a wealth of information if you're into globe trotting.

Anyway....he said to say "hi" to all the pilots that he used to fly with here. Bill looks fantastic and is still one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet.
