March 1st

Post by Ward Odenwald »

Way to early to commit to a Tuesday but five days out the forecasters' crystal balls are saying maybe. Let’s start planning for a mid-week soaring experience.

I'll take a good look at the forecasts tonight and tomorrow morning to see if it will H2-able. Otherwise, if it looks good enough (but +H2), or if someone is interested in XC that day, I'll take off from work.
Interested,

Looks like Wednesday (the 2nd) will have much better soaring conditions than Tuesday. If the forecast holds, I'm planning of going to the Pulpit Wednesday morning.

Hugh would you be available to observe at the Pulpit, Tues Mar 1st, if conditions stay decent? Unfortunately I have a meeting Tues morning and so I would not be able to get to launch until around 1230. What do you think?

Wish I could fly Wed but will be in a class all day :(

thanks,

I can be available. Let's keep watching the forecast. Right now, looks like later is lighter, so maybe perfect for Pulpit venturi effect. Bacil, Mark, what say you? - Hugh

Re: March 1st = sled ride

Post by Ward Odenwald »

In the interest of selecting the best day and site to fly, Tuesday is shaping up to be one of those days where after takeoff from the Pulpit you'll most likely point your glider at the primary and hope that you get there. Surface winds may suggest the right direction and speed but, at 500 below launch (1700 ft) and above, Tuesday's winds aloft predictions are showing a smart north-cross for most of the day. Wednesday, however, is going to be one of those days where after lift-off, you're going up!

Thanks, Ward - I can use plenty of help prognosticating the weather there - agree Wednesday is probably better - I just can't be there to observe Wednesday. Maybe High Rock would take the north cross better Tuesday - if we could get a quorum for wirecrew? - Hugh

Yes, thanks Ward from me too. I just checked and you are correct; winds aloft forcast 3/1/11 3,000'ASL 1800UTC 19mph 010heading! So What d'ya thing Hugh? I can wire crew then fly(you go first). I'll keep checking.

Looks like dogshit to me... North gets you nuthin' but gnarly turbs and a quick trip to the secondary. Not worth the trip IMHO. - Hugh
P.S. You can e-mail me that statement you are working on; I will be passing it to Paul Voight, the tandem czar (so if you have his address, shotgun it to both of us.

Are you throwing in the towel completely for Tues or still hopeful for maybe High Rock?

I'm out too, next time. How about Smithsburg? 'Forecast' is; 8-10mph 320-340 38-45F. ETA 10am, I gotta fluff my tandem wing, it's been folded-up for too long. Hugh - I'll send that to you & Paul V.

I'd like to hear a good weather guesser say it's gonna at least be reasonable at either site. 19 from NNE at 3000 is not a good forecast... - Hugh

Well at least at Smithsburg, we don't have to worry about the winds aloft too much, do we? I never checked the altitude there, 1,500 - 1,800ft ASL? I've never gotten over 20' above launch there.

Already put in for the day off. I'm committed to being out to Smithsburg or HR if it turns out different.
I'm there.

I agree that Tuesday is too north for Pulpit. If Tuesday were my only day free to fly, I would go to the Sac. Although it looks to be on the light side...long drive for a sled ride.

I'm looking at Wednesday, will start a new thread to avoid confusion.

Though, I would check some other sources. The 12Z-18Z NAM forecast for tomorrow shows a better NW than the GFS at Surface to 850mb levels. Then it turns West after that..

On second thought, I'm sure it's going to be wet & muddy at Sb. Just got a notice, UPS is delivering my new wing tomorrow, gotta be around to sign for it.

Hmmmmmm further investigation shows that tomorrow may really be worth a shot......I know I am bias because I am extremely air horny ........ but let me state my case :)

Tomorrows forecasts:

USairnet for Hagerstown shows 310 degrees at 1pm @ 4mph

Weather.com for Mcconnellsburg shows WNW @ 10mph

Weather.com for Smithsburg shows NW @ 10mph

No Stepper for High Rock shows NW @ 7kts at 1pm (at 1000 feet)

No Stepper for the Pulpit shows NW @ 6kts at 1pm (at 2500 feet)

So I think it is definitely at least worth a shot. I'm not saying it is going to be the best day of the year but it certainly looks flyable and maybe soarable. Not sure if the Pulpit might be back on the table or if High Rock is a better bet??? I am in either way. I can be at either by 1230. I think it could be good :) :)
