Friday/Saturday - November 5th and 6th

Post by jyoder111 »

Looks like it might be shaping up to be another good weekend for Woodstock or the Pulpit. Anyone interested? Observers? If both days look flyable, I might just sleep in my car again, with my zero degree sleeping bag this time. 8)

Can't do Friday-- hope to fly on Saturday and can Observe.

But I'm only going out if there are hurricane-strength winds forecasted.

Friday is a possibility for me for Woodstock ... but just looked at forecast and they're calling for temps. in mid forties... hmm too chilly for me.. If temp. forecast changes to the 50's, my plan would be to arrive around 12:30p, do a sledder and head home by 4p... Sat. looks to be similar temps. Sunday temps. upper 40's. Wind Forecast still looking good :)
Monday looks warmer with NW or WNW...

Light NW and lots of sun. Looks like it should be a really nice weekend. If anyone going out has a spare glider I could borrow, or a wing they would like tuned, I'd really like to get some airtime. I am flush with a quiver of harnesses, but unfortunately no wings.

Thanks,

Hi Kevin,

I have a U2 160 and a Sport 2. Look forward to seeing you!

I really do need to log some work hours - can't take *every* Friday off.

Will observe Sat/Sun. Got my armored suit.

Today has just a bit too much of a west component for me (low hr H-2). Sat winds are perfect but chilly. Sunday looks a little to west for me to consider Woodstock. I'm thinking of going over to Longs Hill on Sunday if I can.

Hmmm-- even though Sunday is looking warmer, I'm a bit worried that it will turn SW-- and the slight North cross for Saturday might make it a perfect day to throw some H2's off of the rock.

Matthew or Hugh (or other observers) if you do plan on Sunday, if Sunday looks good for somewhere, I'd love to know. As it stands I have a conflict Saturday ...

If Saturday will be "Rock-able" I would love to do a couple more tandems. If my new rating card with T3 on it doesn't arrive along with the serialized 30 day membership forms, I will still be asking for rated pilot volunteers -and wirecrew!
Sunday is also possible for observing... - Hugh

I am leaning towards Sunday Stock. Its a shame the windriders site spotter doesn't seem to be available anymore. That was great for refreshing the memory about the subtle direction nuances of each site. Seems like Saturday might be more north. HR? I will be in Fredrick already on Sat.

Also, for the H2s lurking, if Saturday pans out for High Rock, this would be an opportunity to get a different site under your belts and learn the arcane art of cliff launch as practiced at this unique site.

Now while I have your attention let me deliver myself of a speech which I neglected to give the last couple of times out. I apologize if this redundant and preachy, but let me get it off my chest, OK:

You don't have to launch. If you get up on launch and the wire crew is there and they're calling out "light up" or "your glider" - if things don't feel right - the wing won't balance on your shoulders, or it's too cross, or you have a sudden urge to go to the bathroom, or you forgot to eat and your blood sugar is low, or you had a fight with your significant other and you can't focus - you don't have to launch. You can back down off launch and no one will say "boo". Now of course, you are encouraged to make sure you and your equipment are all ready to launch before you go up, but if a problem surfaces, or it's taking you a long time on launch and there are people waiting, it is perfectly acceptable to let them "play through". Maybe if you see someone else launch successfully and you take care of bodily functions and you get mentally centered again and you put on a different jacket that's not so slippery so you can balance the wing on your shoulders better, then you will be able to launch with confidence.

That's all - Hugh

The current forecast looks good for High Rock tomorrow (Sat). I will give the Rock a try if the forecast holds. Sunday looks pretty good for the Rock also if it doesn't go too west.

Thanks Hugh, I think those are good reminders. Staying present is key to safety. It is tempting to try to push those things into the background when we feel we ought to launch because we've driven hours, or we're running out of daylight and just want one more flight...etc.
Speaking of which, this weekend is the end of daylight saving time: "fall back" an hour Saturday night!

Good words, Hugh.
Also, I'm heading out there tomorrow, so if it's "Rock'n" (High Rock), I'd be happy to be a tandem-subjected-pilot and wire crew and such. Pretty much hang-cruisin' this weekend, so I'm game.

I'm in for High Rock tomorrow if Hugh/Matthew are able and willing to observe me? What time are you guys planning on arriving? If people are thinking of flying High Rock on Sunday as well (including an observer) I might try to stay the night somewhere close and be there for a flight Sunday morning/early afternoon. I have to be back in Northern Virginia to work Sunday night at around 530pm so I'll have to play that one by ear.

Looking forward to seeing you guys out there and potentially flying a new site!!!

Looks like one of those hard-to-call weekends, I don't think I'm even going to try until
I see what's happening tomorrow morning. Will be looking at conditions by 7:30 or so....

Chris - OK, I'll put you on my dance card. but Ann-Marie is cuter.

Jon- I think Matthew is coming, or I will observe you. Sunday may be Pulpit - this would be yet another new site for you, yes?

when i was observing, an H2 did exactly that at the pulpit and i told him that he had just gained more respect than if he'd 'machoed' it out. and there were others there who immediately backed me up - which was important.
i think it's an excellent point to have been made.

(is there such a word as 'machoed' ?)

Kevin,

I will have the Sport 2 on the car along with the tandem at High Rock Saturday. Maybe Pulpit Sunday?
