A news item was posted from Reuters:
"Gliders get post-Wall clearance"
East Berlin - Now that the Berlin Wall is coming down, East Germany has also decided that hang gliders are no longer a threat to its security.
The East German parliament changed the law yesterday to allow people to fly hang gliders, long banned because they were ideal for airborne escapes.
With the borders now open for East Germans to travel where they like with their feet firmly on the ground, parliament agreed that there was no longer any need to ban hang gliders.
Explaining the change, Transport Minister Heinrich Scholz said it was mainly aimed at offering young people a hobby.
East Germany has already lifted restrictions on sailing and swimming in the Baltic.

Hangola was pretty impressive. Some highlights:

Launched at the pulpit (15-18 mph), good launch; followed route 16 and got too far back on the ridge. couldn't penetrate to get out in front, lost altitude trying to do so. hit microwave antenna, dove, recovered and landed in the trees. (ellis: so what exciting flights did she have in the months prior to this?)
Adam Swetnik:...
John Pesch - 1/6/90 - 45 mins in magic air 1200' over. approx 4 hours looking for the mysterious microwave pilot.

Re: news from yesteryear -where are they now?
I vividly remember when Sharon Carr overshot the LZ at the Fairgrounds and took out her leading edge/s. She was lucky in that she hit both trees at the same time at about the halfway point along each leading edge, rather than hitting the trees head-on with her control frame. I was standing there getting ready to put the bag on my glider, when she came flying past at a pretty high rate of speed in ground effect. She was about the run out of LZ and as she went past, she yelled, "What should I do?". I responded with the only the only answer I could think of, "Get ready to crash!" as there were really no other options. She slammed into the trees and came to abrupt halt. It reminded me of an airplane landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier where they decelerate from flying speed to a complete stop in the blink of an eye. Sharon was unscathed, but her glider wasn't so lucky. Still, equipment can be repaired or replaced a lot easier than body parts.
