Poll: Combining PG and HG Flights Topics

Post by RedBaron »

Well, alright then. Let's hear from our members what they think. Being the
illustrious president
that I am I think that the current divide between PG and HG pilots (or should I say canyon?) is a very sad state of affairs that needs to be overcome.
One idea of mine is to merge PG and HG Flight Topics to just Flight Topics, which every pilot regardless of their toys is welcome to post to. Of course, if nobody wants this it is not going to happen.

Pros:
- a potentially powerful symbol and quite a modern statement
- it may stimulate PG activity on this forum
- it may stimulate interaction and exchange between HG and PG pilots
- PG flights topics isn't being used anymore anyway

Cons:
- there may not be an immediate cross interest in technical discussions pertaining to one type of wing (there are solutions for that, however)
- there may not be an immediate cross interest in flight reports pertaining to one type of wing

I'm with you Janni. Though I'm still not interested in learning to fly PG, I love a good flying story no matter what the wing.

There used to just be one flying list server. The separate PG and HG forums were set up so as to encourage the PG pilots to use the CHGPA forum to communicate and participate in the club. The most active PG pilots had only communicated with each other via phone and email and never posted flying intentions or flying reports to the list sever. However, it didn't work. There also used to be a PG pilot yahoo group. That has also fallen by the wayside. The active PG crowd pretty much keeps to themselves. Then Ellis recently set up a PG pilot email group. So now they communicate with each other via phone and Ellis' email group. Hence, there is no longer any point to having the PG forum and we should go back to a simple flying forum as the PG community doesn't appear to have any interest in communicating with the rest of the flying community or any PG pilots outside of their clique.

Unfortunately for the sport Matthew appears to be correct. I had hoped that we'd get more participation and cross fertilization from the paragliding community. It's a bit of a disappointment as much as we have done or tried to do for them.

Anyway I see no reason not to combine the two forums, they are essentially hang gliders and biwingals anyway.

By the way I am back in town and looking forward to flying soon. I know of a 100 foot high hill near Bull run, that I used to fly a zagi off of. I think it faces SSE. I'm going to check it out first chance I get. Anyone want to join me on a PG?

"Clique". Well, if you hangies would get some decent color-coordinated flight suits and designer boots and gloves, but no, it's the same old frayed bluejeans, sweatshirts, and sneakers. Sheesh!

In case it's not obvious, my previous post was meant to suggest that we should lighten up a bit and give Janni's initiative a chance to work. Whatever the past history, perhaps we can make a new beginning. Ya catch more flies with honey than vinegar...

Speaking of new beginnings, there is shaping up an all-women PG class with Dwayne McCourt next month, including such HG pilots as Sheila, Judy, Christie (who is already a P2, just coming to have fun), and Karen (P3). [Dan and Carlos, I don't think it was originally conceived as "women only" but they've got enough to saturate Dwayne on 18 July.]

So maybe there is more of a chance of crosstalk if we get a bunch of new biwinguals, including long-time and still active HG pilots Dan T. and Carlos...

I think it's natural that people with similar interest flock ;-) together. I'm sure you can think of some HG cliques as well. That doesn't mean we are not interested in the larger community

Up until a few years ago the PG were not fleshed out by biwingual pilots. There were less than 10 total, and looking at a nearly empty listserver is kinda depressing. Of course they would just make phone calls and private emails. Mix them in with a bunch of HG who want to go out in conditions that often are not suitable for PG, and I think they will continue to make phone calls and private emails. A small group doesn't really need a listserver.

Roll into one group and the posts will be proportional to the numbers, about 5 to one for monowingual of each type. Nothing wrong with that. Works fine in all the other listservers. I think it's better to just ignore the differences and make one listserver.

I feel I should point out that there is a maximum of 10 relatively active PG pilots in the area. I define "relatively active" as flying PG once a month. And even so, 10 is stretching it.

We are interested in the larger CHGPA community. I see this poll as a gauge of how much the larger CHGPA community is interested in including us.

Heh. co-posted previous with Brian... thinking along the same lines apparently...

Actually it takes more than 10 pilots to make a listserver. I think Brian has it about right. For every 5 pilots, one will post. If you have 10 pilots, two on average will post. Two will not make a forum. Kind of pointless. After a while, they'll just start emailing each other and might cc the other eight and pretty soon you have a regular private email list.
