April 12 Flying

Post by carweill »

Sure most are recovering from Shawn's party.
(Sorry had be somewhere else, but I'm sure he got a god send off)

Anyone considering flying on Sunday
Looks like another Woodstock/Pulpit dilema

I was thinking Woodstock today, but could go either way W. or the Rock.

Good day at Woodstock
Beautiful day. Hangliders first and Paragliders later.
Dave P, Steve K, Tom M, Adam , Gary and I in the HG contingent. Thomas, Stephan, Ellis and couple others in PG group. Strong North cross for winds aloft at times. Believe Tom got to 5600 over.

Sunday was a great day. Winds were a little north but not too strong. I didn't have the exceptionally strong climbs that Dave and Steve experienced, but had fun thermalling a number of times to more than 3k over. I also enjoyed flying with a mature and immature bald eagles, and hanging out above Strausburg. At the end of the day, just south of launch, I topped out at 3300 over in a thermal, then stumbled into some smooth lift of 300 up. I hovered up while flying straight into the wind, climbing to 5600 over. At that point, I was getting pushed backwards around 10 mph, plus I was getting pretty cold. To not drift back, I had to fly 40 mph but that killed my climb rate. Given all that, I went south out of the wave and went down to land to warm up. My guess is 2.5 hours total.

Thanks to Dave and Steve for bringing my truck down the mountain.

See you all out soon
