Sacramento 2/28

Post by XCanytime »

An AM flight in straight in conditions looks possible before the direction swings to the NE. Don't know when that swing will occur. I'm considering heading up early (suprise!) and catching the better conditions should the prediction be worth it. Any others interested?

I am going to keep an eye on the weather. No sun, will have to consider cloud base. Could be nice lift with the fron passing anyhow.

I am thinking about it too, but it still looks cross from the east to me. However, the rest of the family will be out of town and I have nothing better to do. I will get a relatively late start though. Hope to see you guys there.

Real nice day at the SAC. It's a great feeling when the flight plan is followed to a T  . Got there at 10A and put streamers in the slot. The goal today was to land at the Benigna Creek Winery just east of Klingerstown. Janni and Carlos showed up just after 10A. Joe and Karen came up; Joe took care of Carlos with the waivers and walking the LZs. Took off at 11A into 10 to 15 STFI with Janni and Carlos helping. Turned right and got up in a slight NE cross on the ridge. Caught a nice one to 1200' over and drifted down the valley past launch. Lost a few hundred then caught another one back up to 1200' over. Sighted the winery and went on glide. Made it with a few hundred feet to spare. Put down in the huge field across the street. Twenty minute flight. Carried over to behind the winery building for some wind shadow to break down. Went in and bought a bottle and sat on the deck enjoying the sun. Thanks to Janni for the retrieve. Janni had a nice hour flight and 2500' over. He got flushed after Carlos extendoed. Ashley Groves also flew. Back at launch around 2:30P Tom and Glen Hardy were soaring in smooth looking ridge lift. Some pics follow.

Well, with all those hours under my belt the Sac didn't look so terrible as it did 2 years ago anymore. I walked both LZ's with Carlos and Joe and decided that landing my bird in the secondary was well within my skill set.
Launched after Bacil who had a very nice launch to find myself slowly climbing in moderately turbulent and cross air. Ran the ridge up and down between the gap and where the curvature of the ridge in combination with the NE direction made for lousy lift until it all shut down after an hour or so. Mananged 2500' over in one thermal that was a welcome change from the tight shots of random lift. My landing was a mess, it was doing NW in the secondary and I almost spiraled my glider into the ground. Turned onto final 20 feet off the ground, downhill to boot and when I popped the nose and induced a turn when I transitioned to the uprights I already saw myself in the hospital. Pulled in, leveled and flared with whatever I had left. Not much, came down on my knees and the base tube, not bad given the odds, phew.

I had a great flight. 2 1/2 hours and max of 1650 over. Lots of thermals despite the overcast, although they faded the last half hour of the flight. I saw lots of redtails and even a V of 100 snow geese headed north. I found the air quite nice and was able to spend most of my time between 800 and 1400 over working the light thermals.

A special thanks to two of the nicest people in hang gliding. Joe and Karen launched most of us, and Karen came out to the LZ to watch me land to make sure I was ok. Thank you.

"...dodged a bullet yet again!"

could some kind of forum feature be added whereby us snarky, snipey types can accrue merits or something for when we actually Do exert constraint and Don't post?
i mean. . . for some of us it is reeealy reeealy hard!
particularly us ADHD types who get bored real easily. i mean, sure, i've been getting in trouble since jr high school and before and you'd a thunk i'd learned Something by now but . . .well it's just reeeeally hard not to want to stir the pot and attempt some lame reference back to jr's thingy(!)
i mean. . .it'd be mostly innocent and after all it IS a snow day? . . . still no, huh? . . . ahh goshdarnitanyhow :(
