Daniels 2/1

Post by XCanytime »

Looks quite toasty and a good SSW wind for Sunday. Anybody interested in Daniels? Bacil

Both, football and hang gliding. 4WD vehicle required (for Sunday). I-81 south to Rt. 33 south. Cross over Skyline Drive. Right turn onto Dyke Road. Pass thru hamlet of Geer, VA. Right onto Rosebrook Road, then a quick right onto Snow Mountain Road. Right off of Snow Mountain Road onto unnamed road that goes to the Daniels launch. (Check these directions out on Mapquest).

Tony,
There should be a few more HG pilots with appropriate vehicles coming that you could carpool with up the mountain. You should be able to get a ride up for you and your equipment.

That sounds like a better plan. What time are you planning to get there?

You know there is a fair possiblity there will be snow and ice on the mountain and road. Just a guess though.

Anyone NOT flying a TOPLESS glider may wish to look at the winds aloft forecast. ADDS shows 45-50mph at 3K.

Bacil and I arrived at about 11. I was able to 2 wheel drive it up about half way... then couldn't get thru the mud at the end of the gravel. Bacil 4 wheeled it thru the mud to the switchback... and we carried my glider to his vehicle. At the top we found 5-10 with gusts to 15-20... pretty much straight in. To make a long day/story short.... We waited... and waited.... and waited some more. We decided to setup at about 2ish in anticipation of things backing down a bit. In the meanwhile, Janni, and Glen showed up/setup. Randy Weber, Ellis, Hugh, Nelson and Laslo all showed up (probably forgot a couple names). Winds aloft looked to be pretty strong from the west. At about 4ish Bacil went to launch, and did not like the cross, so backed off and broke down his glider. Me being a fresh 3 decided that if someone with much more experience wasn't going to chance it... I wasn't either. So, I broke down, too. As we finished breaking down.. conditions got much better... Glen launched for a 30 minute extendo, Janni launched, Randy Launched. Glen said he got about 1200 over, and was getting tossed around a bit. Then Hugh and Laslo launched their PG's and had nice extendo's. Bacil and I loaded the gliders, and headed down. So much for the long story short.... It was a beautiful day at launch... I think I actually got a light sunburn on my face. So... now I know where Daniels is, and that I need to get a 4WD to get to launch. Thanks Bacil for the ride and the site introduction. See ya next time.
