Sorry about this being OT but thought some of you might want to know.
Lauren is home recovering after her shoulder surgery yesterday. She had significant damage including her labrum (the cartilage that creates the socket part of the joint) being torn away from the scapula for more than half of it's circumference including the attachment point of her bicep muscle. With this injury, every time she made any attempt to lift her arm away from her side, she would instead pull the labrum away from the scapula. Obviously, this would have never healed without repair but now her prognosis for a full recovery is excellent and should take about 4 months.

Ouch, I am pleased that you posted Paul. Tell Lauren that I am wishing for a speedy-fast recovery. Make her comfortable and treat her like a Baby..... you know, diaper with powder and a bottle of Gin
Heal fast Lauren. Thanks Paul.

Lauren,
How is your recovery going? I assume you must be doing physical therapy and are you making progress? Any fun lately? We all wish you a speedy recovery.

Re: Lauren's surgery
Oh, aren't you sweet, Mr. Middleton! I was overjoyed to have my first day of PT today. Not allowed to do much. I get to wiggle my arm by my side and lift it a little with my other arm. Still! I am on my way.
Turns out I had a great deal of damage; my labrum was ripped half off, and my bicep split in two and totally detached at the head. I am out for probably 6 months from now. I figure around August 1st I can fly my good glider again. With luck, I can fly my Pulse and land on my wheels before that. Actually I am good now that the pain is not so bad. It was pretty crappy for the first week after the surgery. I am just trying to move forward now.
I am also trying to figure out when I can get in a tandem glider. I figure I can con a pilot boy into taking me up --Jim or Jonnie or Dustin -- or maybe Jamie as soon as I can lie on my tummy.
I am obnoxious and bored and sure to be causing lots of trouble in the next few months. I also promise to be the pissiest driver in the world for the comps.

I love this girl... What great spirit! Get well soon and back to flying and writing... Love/hate those everyday flying stories while the rest of us suffer at work. Ya got real courage and the soul of life girl and we admire that.

Lauren,
You sound like a candidate for sailplane driving while you heal up. (Not clear which arm is gimpy - handling the tiny little, uh, "joystick" between your legs requires no strength, but the spoiler/brake handle on the left does a little...
I am the lead act for the sailplane club's annual safety meeting tomorrow. Subject: hang-gliding, natch (and how SAFE it is...). I'm just the warm-up act for Kevin Fleet, who pioneered one of our prime sites (Woodstock, Dickey's?). He was one of the guys who saw the article in Popular Science, went in his basement and built a glider out of bamboo and plastic sheet, was crashing and burning at Jockey Ridge when an older fella started making some suggestions about angle of attack - turned out to be Francis Rogallo. Anyway, Kevin has been declared dead several times (he survived a scary sailplane upset this past year).
Ellis and I are preparing ourselves for the ordeal of 26 hours in the airline system to get to New Zealand next weekend. Got my doctor to prescribe Ambien. Excerpt from the precaution sheet: "DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine...SOME PATIENTS TAKING THIS MEDICINE have performed certain activities while they were not fully awake. These have included sleep-driving, making and eating food, making phone calls, and having sex..." Had I known I would be having this much fun while sleeping, I would have gotten Ambien sooner - but alas, I'll be asleep...
