glider landing in Harpers Ferry Nat'l Hist. Park???

Post by huddlec »

Danny, Steve, any other sail plane pilot-
Do you know anything about the sail plane that landed on Bolivar Heights, within the Park Service land? It made our town newsletter. Know if the guy got a fine? I know from the air it must look like a great place to land. The SE side would be a wonderful training hill for paragliders. Sigh.

Found out from one of the rangers today that the sailplane pilot had a German accent. He didn't get a ticket. As the ranger explained, 'He said he had an emergency and had no choice but to land there." So if you're going to land in a national park, speak with a foreign accent and make up some emergency. Beats paying over $100!

Ahh, that would be a Belgium accent.

update on glider landing in Harpers Ferry Nat'l Hist. Park

Post by huddlec »

Here's another possible way of getting away with landing your glider in a National Park:

Ms. Huddle,

I apologize for not getting back with you. I have been out of the office
since the 24th.

As to your question, the glider made an emergency landing when the wind
shifted and he lost altitude. This was witnessed by a park staff member.
There was no damage to park property and the glider was removed within a
few hours. As such the pilot was not issued a citation.

If you have further questions please feel free to give me a call at the
number below.

So what did you do, Christie, write to ask why he wasn't fined? - Hugh

Nope. I wrote to ask if he was fined. As you know I live within walking distance of this piece of land and if I ever were to fly here from Cumberland, I could land and walk home. Now I know what to say if they try to ticket me.
