I finally got to fly from Lookout mountain near Golden, CO. I had tried
last Sunday, but the winds switched when I got there.
This site is very convenient to the Denver area. It is approximately 1000'
vertical with a nice LZ immediately below launch. It is an east-facing site
and can be flown in SE to NE winds. Since the prevailing winds in the area
are mostly from the W, it is primarily a thermal site. Visiting pilots
should contact the locals (info at http://www.rmhga.org ) before flying
there, as it is a very sensitive site.
Yesterday, conditions were ideal for a first-time flight. Othe pilots were
present, and I was able to convince one of them to sponsor me. Launch
conditions were ideal, at 3-8mph. I was able to catch a thermal right after
launch and gained 500', allowing me to stay in good position to catch a few
more. I extended my flight to about 30 minutes. I found the LZ to be a
bit turbulent. It is next to a major thoroughfare with many trucks and cars
driving by, so I staged over the nearby canyon and had an uneventful
landing, albeit right into a thermal breaking from the LZ.
The local pilots were very freindly and helpful. All in all a nice
experience. I'll be bringing my wing to Denver in the future.
