The most effective interrogator of 9/11 suspects refused to be trained in waterboarding. The article honestly admits uncertainty over whether pressure techniques made prisoners more pliable, and the evidence could go either way. But information almost never emerged directly under torture, in fact after a prisoner relented and agreed to cooperate, the 'good cop' questioning usually waited for the next day, and would continue for weeks. It appears this was because the trained interrogators felt a need to distance themselves from the pressure techniques, and were largely distrustful of information gained that way.
