"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view." -- Mike Huckabee
I have been amazed that this outrageous speech by Huckabee last Monday has gotten so little news attention. Are Americans so stupid that they don't understand what this means? He should have been massacred by the press for such a statement. I would think this nonsense would only have the support of the most radical fringe element of Christians but I guess I'm wrong.

Yes they are is the simple answer but it is a bit more complicated I believe. Those far right folks like Huckabee are part of a well planned propaganda machine of the Republican political establishment. The have their radio voice in Rush Limbaugh and others, the Christian TV, and radio groups spewing the political message wrapped in their god and the American flag and they have their Christian schools from kindergarten to K 12 and a host of evangelical colleges and universities.
Have you noticed how all the mega evangelical churches are putting up American Flags beside their crosses and wrapping the flag around their religion. That message that you are not patriotic if you are not
Christian is deliberate. Guess we can expect to have all non christians loose their citizenship when they finally get done with their crusade on America.
Now I personally believe that many of the evangelical folks don't realize how they and their faith are being used by the political leaders of the Republican party. They don't seem to realize that they have sold their soul to the devil for political gain. We should not forget that a majority of good christian Germans fell to the fervor of Adolph Hitler when economic times were tough and the country's was pride bruised. Americans don't seem any smarter to me.

The question is whether the backlash against modernity (in all cultures, not just the American one - the Muslims are facing the same problem) will be strong enough to really change things - or will it be the last gasp? All these movements are fueled by (well-founded) concern that traditional culture is being swept away by the modern world. Here in America, there seems to be a backlash against the backlash (present company being prime examples). Can the same thing happen in the Muslim world? Most people really want the benefits of our modern civilization: flush toilets, exposed belly buttons on teenage girls, the weekend (the concept of leisure time), extruded aluminum for hang-gliders... - Hugh
