today Friday after Thanksgiving
What's the consensus, looks ok but cold.
WS Today
Turned out to be a surprisingly nice day at Woodstock. Arrived at noon, just in time for the freight trains to start rolling through launch. I set up anyway hoping for the best. Karen deemed it to be too cold. Tom, John Harper and Carlos also set up. Mike Lee and Shawn Ray didn't think it would back down and had to leave early. Pete Schuman also broke down because he had to leave early. Dave Bodner, however, decided to wait it out. Things started to improve around 2:15 amd John launched. He reported ratty down low and smooth up high. Tom jumped next, followed by me and then Carlos. Big thanks to Mike and Shawn for sticking around to help us launch.
It was a bit choppy low. But I climbed right up to 1k over. It was baby butt smooth for most of my flight. I flew down to Signal Knob and back, mostly crusing at about 800-1800 over. Could've gotten higher but I ddin't want to get cold. Had a halk or falcon buzz me up by the reservoir-- saw a flock of geese fly below me. The trees were crimson in the late afternoon sun and the skies were crystal clear. It's one of the best flights I've had in a long time. Never really had to work to stay up.
Got back to launch in time to see David Bodner launch. He flew for about a half hour. As he was heading out to land, I flew out into the valley and took one last thermal up to 2800 over launch.
Landed about 10 minutes before sunset for 1:48 flight. The only time I got cold was when I was trying to get down to land. Everything was lifting off at the end of the day. John said he found some wave and got to 6K msl.
Fun Fun Day!!!

Sometimes we just psych ourselves out of flying.
The winds at launch weren't too bad, but the clouds seemed to be traveling quickly. So we waited. The topless guys weren't going; I certainly wasn't going to send my Falcon up there. Finally, people started launching after it backed off a bit. Launches generally looked good, and no one looked be having trouble. Matthew reported from the air that it looked Falconable. Everyone else was up, and Karen helped me muscle my glider to launch.
It was beautiful. Easy lift. No problems penetrating even when the lift got strong. Once, as I was turning, I saw something in the corner of my eye. I thought it was Matthew. Then I saw it was a hawk soaring about 10 feet from my left leading edge. His wings and tail were spread for maximum lift. I think he had been surfing my wake. That was my first close encounter of a raptor kind.
The sun was getting close to the horizon, and I was a bit overcome by the hawk, so I decided to land. Just then, the lift got strong. It took a while to get down. On the ground I told Tom McG. about the hawk. He said the bird had been following me all around.
You guys can talk about carabiners and weak links. I'll just sit here tonight and think about my hawk.

I'm happy you cats got to fly!!!..... I needed to make a call on my time to spend on launch. Kicked myself in the ass the whole way home.I needed to roll out though. I had plans- visiting( holiday season.) I didn't see anything I needed as far as conditions untill it was time for me to get back.
It was a good day out for Malina and I though.
Peace, Shawn.
