Front Royal Airport at (long) last (long)

Post by XCanytime »

Arrived at Woodstock around 9:15A to find Janni's truck and girlfriend Leona in it. Met up with Janni at launch. Breezy with cumies popping to the NW over in WV. They slowly made their way over launch as John Dullahan, Tom McGowan, Bruce Engen, Dave Proctor, Pete Schumann, Matthew and Karen, Randy Weber, Brian Vant-Hull, Dave Bodner, Chris McKee, Mike Lee and Rhonda, and others arrived and set up. Nobody was in a big hurry, so we watched the cycles (strong at times, but with nice long lulls) and waited. Finally John started the exodus with a nice launch during a lull at 12 noon. I followed him with a nice launch a few minutes later. Hit turbulent lift right out of the slot. Gained to 1K' over figure-8ing in the lift. Turned right and headed NE slowly, with a distinct north cross at 1K' over. Around 2 fingers up from the launch the north cross disappeared. Got to 2K' over in a thermal and continued NE. Looked back and saw 4 gliders stinking high under a huge cumie that spread out in all four directions over the launch. Made it up to Signal Knob, flew back to just past the reservoir, and decided to hang around and intercept this nice cloud coming my way. It grew like the one over launch earlier, enabling me to get to 4500' MSL drifting OTB with the Front Royal Airport in sight. Committed and drifted ever so slowly in turbulent lift over the Fort Valley. My track went over lots of trees, and for a few seconds during the turbulent drift it didn't look like I was moving, and that is visually scary  . I then looked to the right and had some fields in the Fort Valley within reach. My altimeter told me I was still at 4500' MSL, and I finally started moving visually :D . Had big fields west of the airport made, and flew over them at 3200' MSL. Trees were between me and the airport, so I flew upwind to see if I could make it over the airport, with the big fields as an out. Switched the radio onto the airport Unicom frequency to monitor traffic. Didn't hear or see anyone as I made it over the airport at 2500' MSL, well above the pattern altitude of 1700' MSL. Hung out over the departure end of the runway, pointed into the due north wind at altitude. Slowly lost altitude on the north side of the runway, keeping with the right-hand pattern rule for Runway 27 for sailplane traffic. Drifted over the parking lot, causing a stir among the grounded sailplane pilots hanging outside. Visually checked for traffic, even if no calls occurred on the radio. No traffic was occurring, so I drifted across the runway, lining up with the windsock by the taxiway, which was showing a strong north wind. Put down in moderate turbulence in the grassy area by the hangars. Carried over to the tiedown area as a group of 3 pilots came out to check me out. They were friendly, and helped me break down the glider. Met the airport manager, who was also very cordial. One of the pilots, who flies a gyrocopter out of the airport, bought me lunch from the benefit going on in the parking lot (with live music 8). Enjoyed the music and the festivities waiting for Brett and Floris, friends of Alek, to retrieve me. Back at launch I packed up and had them follow me to retrieve Alek, who landed out in a field that I landed out in way back in May of 1998. We found Alek easily. The very friendly landowner mentioned to Alek earlier that they had some hang glider pilot land in their field about 10 years ago. He was just one year off  Time sure does fly.

Unintentional omission

Forgot to mention that 5 pilots (that I know of) made it to Harrisonburg (and beyond!). John Dullahan, Tom McGowan, Pete Schumann, Dave Proctor, and Bruce Engen. Bruce mentioned that he came close to making it to Shenandoah Regional Airport. That's over 10 miles SW of Massanutten Peak.
