Pulpit Labor Day?

Pulpit Labor Day?
Can probably fly on either Sunday or Monday, but not both.
So I'm trying to figure out if the W@5-10 surface forecast for
the Pulpit will actually happen... Some of the upper-level
maps seem to support it; anyone want to venture a guess?
And more to the point, who else would be up for a Pulpit day?

The maps that have me encouraged for Monday
are the ADDS 3k:
http://adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov/winds/
and the NWS surface cast at this
link.
Looks like it could be a good day up there!

Janni and I are planning to carpool to the Pulpit tomorrow.
If Mike, Rhonda, and Dave B can make it, then we should
have critical mass for wire crew. Hopefully some others
will be able to make it?
Forecast sure looks nice, with an overnight low of 55 and
a high tomorrow of 85... Conditions should be kickin!
Dave, probably no need to bring the weedeater; Janni checked
things out today and feels that mowing isn't needed. Some
quick spot-trimming the Friday/weekend of the Fly-In will
probably be enough.

Forecasts still look good...
Talked to Carlos and Dave, and they're both in.
Me three of course. Mike L and Rhonda plan to
swing by, though perhaps a bit later in the day.
Janni and Glenn are both going.
That certainly seems like enough for a Pupit sortie,
so let's go fly!!

PS: ETA of about noon for me and Janni.

Today turned out to be a mixed-bag type of day, but overall,
lots of good flights! And everyone had good launches and
landings.
PG pilots Laszlo and Tomas (sp?) joined Janni, Glen, Dave,
Carlos, Tim, and myself at the Pulpit, so we had a pretty
good crowd (at least for a family-type holiday like today).
Lazslo launched first at around 1:30, and was up immediately.
Winds had been looking fairly light (often under 10), so we
hangies were cheered by the sight. We ran a shuttle, dropping
a couple vehicles, and then noticed Lazslo heading for the
secondary. Uh-oh! We picked him up and discovered that
he'd had a collapse during his flight, and although the wing
recovered fine, Lazslo decided it was an indicator that things
were getting too rough, and landed.
Back up top, winds had picked up, with gusts to 20, and lulls
of about 10. Sometimes west, sometimes northwest.
So the HG'ers started diving off, with Carlos, Glen, and Dave
off first, around 2:30. All seemed to be doing fairly well, but
when Tim launched, we noticed that Glen (Falcon) had landed.
By the time I was on the right ramp (with help from Janni,
who was sharing a glider, and Lazslo and Tomas, thanks
guys!), the winds had lightened. And only one other pilot
was up, double uh-oh!
In the air, the winds were often significantly cross from the
north, making the lulls difficult to survive. I scratched for
about 45 minutes, then made some bad choices and found
myself below the ridge. Headed towards the LZ, but ran into
an area of lift just across from it, and was able to work my
way up. Started getting a better feel for the day, realizing
that I had to put it on a tip and spin if I wanted to get above
the rotor-y cr@p down low.
That eventually worked, and I got to 2k over. After a brief
sortie to the north, I came back south to intercept a couple
clouds, and got to 3k over that time. And I couldn't resist
going over the back any longer, so I burbled along.
The track in the valley was WSW, and that heading took me
into totally blue skies, and on a course between 30 and 16.
Wanting to make pickup easier, I tried jumping south to a
street that was closer to Rt 16. Yeah, yeah, I knew it was a
bad move, but figured 'what the heck?'
Made it to Upton, but couldn't find anything with the altitude I
had left, so I put down in a field a couple blocks from Stickler's
general store (FYI: has Coke machines outside the building).
Back at the Pulpit, Dave took a second flight and Janni borrowed
Glen's glider for what turned out to be an hour-long flight in
magic air. And Tim was very happy with his first mtn flight on
his new Sport-2. So all in all, a great day!
The entire caravan pulled up where I was hanging out by the
road... Pretty funny sight, all those trucks picking up just me?
We adjourned to the pizza place near the intersection of 16 and
11 and scarfed down a couple large.
Janni and I had to drive back to the LZ because I realized
that I'd left my wind streamers in the field, so that added
nearly an hour to our day. But the view of the night sky almost
made up for that.
Great day to be out, sorry that more couldn't join the fun.

PS: Kudos to Glen for hauling a load of firewood up to the
Pulpit for the Fly-In, on Sunday, with only dim possibilities
of a Bill's Hill flight. And to Janni for helping unload, and then
giving Glen a hand for what turned out to be a sled ride.
We'll have quite a bonfire thanks to them!

Glen has gone way out of his way to bring the wood. I didn't do much on this account.
Had a great flight yesterday on Glen's borrowed glider LOL. I guess it turned magic, had only little trouble staying above the ridge. Lift was light and interrupted, though, don't think I would have made it if I still hooked in at 290 lb. I was scratching low for a while, then I found a trench half a mile South of the ramps of which small bubbles kept dripping off. Took me to 2000 over at one point. never flew one coordinated 360, just kept hovering back and forth over the ridge behind that trench.

Gosh darn it what a way to end the day. Can't just leave 'em there cause the landowner might object. Now skinsley enterprises has two new solutions to this pesky problem'
Item 413. All organic all natural windsock. A cornstalk pole with a streamer of rare Japanese Otsuka seaweed. Bright red! Easy to see. Also sea weed is edible -- used by sushi chefs -- yum!! 19.95 each
Item 434. For those who prefer a more instant solution try our "Disappearing Windsock". This is a standard metal pole support with Dacron streamer but comes with a powerful explosive attachment and cell phone activated detonater. All that's left is metal shards inconspicuously spread over several acres. 29.95. each. Sorry kids but federal law prohibits sales to persons under 16 years of age.
