Pulpit PG Saturday

Post by Matthew »

Pulpit was great! Flew my bag twice. Two other baggers, Jeff and Thomas, flew.

I launched my PG in somewhat strong conditions for the 1st flight and had to side-step the rocks on the right of launch and then use speed bar to get out front. Once on the ridge there were no penetration problems. Got 3K over in a thermal but decided to stay out front and catch the next ride over the back. That didn't happen. Landed in a flush cycle after an hour flight that also caught Jeff. Thomas had disappeared down the ridge with no radio and no one knowing his cell. He later showed up reporting that he had landed to the South along the ridge.

I launched again at around 3pm and went over the back with 3K over-- made it to Lemasters after another thermal. I wanted to follow route 16 towards Greencastle. But the drift and closer clouds called for a turn to the North. Arrived at next cloud at launch level and took it up to 4700 over (6900msl). Then I bopped along the back edge of string of clouds to Chambersburg and jumped across I-81. Saw a nice huge filed about 3 miles east of C-burg and headed there to land. At 3700msl hit the biggest lift of the day, 1300 fps up. It felt like I was being plucked into space. Climbed back up to 6K msl and went to the edge of the Michaux State Forest. It was hazy and all I could see was trees, trees, trees. So I flew back upwind to the field I had picked.

And then I couldnt get down. Bacil radioed that Dan was on the way. I boated over the field for about 20 minutes betwenn 3700 and 5200msl without even trying to stay up. Finally found some sink and landed after 1:45. Dan arrived as I was folding up the wing. I think I landed about 22 miles out, with furthest point being a couple of miles more... my longest PG XC flight.
