Highland Sat12May

Post by markc »

Headed to Highland today, in spite of the NE direction, the increasing
forecast, and the minimal prospects for soaring... I've got some travel
coming up, and figured that I should give it a go since I won't have a
weekend until early June (and not sure I'm up for the drive to the 'Sac
tomorrow).

Thought I'd be the onliest pilot, but Carlos was there... Yay Carlos! :-)

Winds turned out to be fairly light when I arrived, and out of the east,
eventually the SE. So it wasn't dumping over the trees. I gave it a go
around 1:45 or so, finding some bouyant air and zero sink. Then we
started to get some decent sun, so Carlos gave it a try, and then I
followed. My second flight was better: found something around 1700'
that took me to 2400' or so. But the drift was very fast and I couldn't core
it, so the flight was only 25 minutes or so.

Had wanted a 'sporty' tow and more practice landing with the new harness,
and I got both. Actually... I was very pleased with the 2nd landing,
and wasn't paying attention as I moved off the field. The wind got under a
wing, and *oops*, I was nose-down with the glider bass-ackwards to the
wind in a flash. Sunny and Zac came to my rescue (thanks guys!). How embarrassing!

The winds started ramping up after Carlos had his second flight, so we
called it quits around 3:45 or so.

Surprisingly ok day, glad I went!
