For those pilots who have entered the Regionals, and those who might yet do so if the rain stops, I have a couple of clarifications on the rules.
1. As was pointed out at the time the year’s new rules were issued, they contained a contradiction regarding the scoring mode. Specifically, I was unclear as to weather downloaded tracklogs would be required or not. In fact, the use of downloaded tracklogs will NOT be required. Their use will however give a contestant a clear advantage as the scoring system calculates total distances flown along, for example, a dogleg. If a pilot does not have a data-logging gps that can download a track, the scored distance will simply be measured by the previously used straight line method.
2. Upon researching (via Davis Straub) the HOLC (hang gliding on-line contest) scoring rules, I discovered another mistake of mine. The HOLC scoring rules are as follows,
a. Straight line or any dogleg flight containing up to three turn points is scored at 1.5 points per kilometer flown,
b. Non-FAI-legal triangles are scored at 1.75 points per kilometer flown, and
c. FAI-legal triangles are scored at 2 points per kilometer flown.
Finally, I will do the scoring. To gain the scoring benefits of the HOLC rules, all a competitor must do is download and save their tracklog in either a Garmin .gdb format or, better, as an .igc file. If you have any difficulty with that process contact me by phone (412) 661-3474, or email lplehmann@msn.com and I should be able to talk you through the process.
Pray for sunshine,
