Roof Rack Recommendation for 4Runner...

Post by Danny Brotto »

I just picked up an ’07 4Runner with factory roof racks. I work with a guy who has a side company doing welding work. He’s going to set me up with an off-the-frame front rack rig. I'm looking for some input on the main 2 crossbar rigs.

The 3 roof rack companies I know of are Saris, Yakima, and Thule. Saris no longer makes roof racks (although they are available via e-bay) leaving the Yaks and Thule.

On the old vehicle, I left the roof racks on permanently but with the 4Runner, I'll generally want to remove them when not in use. Ease and speed of assembly and removal are CTQ’s. I’m leaning towards the Thule 450R’s. Anyone with recommendations/insights?

BTW, I’m finding the 4Runner to be a very good ride.

I test drove an'07 4Runner last weekend. It was a "Limited" edition with a contoured/elevated front hood. It drove/rode well, but I didn't like what I perceived as the limited visibility thru the windshield.

Why not just use the factory-installed roof racks along with your manufactured front rack? They seemed plenty sturdy enough to haul a few gliders.

Get an I-Force Tundra--it can do almost anything (except keep you out of the poor house on fuel costs)! Does for-real heavy duty off-road, hauls heavy loads/trailers long distances no problem, and can mount a snow plow on the front. The new ones are perfected--my 02 has a few weaknesses that have been eliminated in the new ones (oxygen sensors post catalytic converter have been eliminated, and the front end reinforced to take heavy loads/impact forces). The ride is great and off-road 4-wheeling is a blast.

The stock roof racks on my 2000 'Runner seem to do the job
just fine, for up to 4 gliders.

(Short-haul trips... I might want something different if I was
going to transport lots of gliders on a long roadtrip.)

4Runner Racks...

Post by Danny Brotto »

Thanks guys,

I think the factory racks are beefy enough, I was more worried about the bag flapping and hitting the roof creating a racket in the cabin. Guess I should try the factory racks first and see how it goes.

JR, I find the sculpted hood to not create a practical visibility problem.

Hey Danny,

I just had Tex forrest put a rack on the front of my
'98 4runner.... it works great... and as for the roof
, i use kayak foam pads...you can get them at any
sporting goods store... it all lines-up and I know
will hold a glider at up to 95 MPH, LOL

BTW, Tex's racks are welded to the frame and have
2 quick release pins for easy removal....
at a price of about $275.00

'Til then, Mike 8)
