Tom C., Juan, Laszlo and I (plus several others) are heading to Daniel's today. SE turning south. Depart around 1000. - Hugh
All of the above, plus Noah, Jim Kaplan, Carl Dennis - and Steve K on pipes, showed up. I launched first around 1230 but was on the ground by 1235. Very shortly after, Tom and Juan, who were ambitious to go to Sperryville, were high over the back and the wind ramped up. Juan bailed on full speed bar (1300 fpm down) and made it back out front. (I picked him up later one field NE of the regular LZ.) Tom took one more turn and got trapped behind the ridge. Ate the rotor big time - multiple collapses. (He has video from a camera mounted up in the canopy.) Landed hard in the bushes and Juan sent us to the vehicles to go after him. But Tom came on the radio shakily "no bones broken...I can stand...I can walk...OK, I'll just walk back up." We spent the rest of the day parawaiting. It would calm down for while, then another big gust would come. Kinsley had a nice long HG flight. (Guess I shouldn't have committed to PG so completely for the day...)
About 90 minutes before sunset, Juan launched again, displaying impressive kiting and control in the slot. He had a nice flight out front. I left along with most of the others about an hour before sunset. (Guilt over kid home alone - gotta work on that...) I heard Laszo announcing on the radio that Tom was launching as I drove away. Gorgeous day... - Hugh

To finish the story:
Tom launched in mellowing conditions, followed by me (while Juan landed). Going up was easy, but staying in front of the ridge required trim speed first, and as winds picked up again, full speedbar (for my DHV 1 glider -- Tom had an easier time). Took me about 20 minutes to get above the edge of the LZ. The air was relatively smooth, with evenly strong wind. Tom landed first, followed by me.
